Mangalore: College Bus Overturns En Route to College

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (RD)

Mangalore, May 6: A college bus  belonging to an educational  institute overturned  close to the college campus on Tuesday May 6 morning.

The bus belonging  to an educational institution located in the outskirts of the city was carrying students when the accident occurred.

The driver of the  bus,  carrying girl students of an  engineering college  apparently lost control of his vehicle when a rear tyre burst. The accident happened at Yekkur on the National Highway 14.

It is believed that the driver of the bus reported the malfunctioning of the brake system to the administrator but he was instructed to carry on as there was no other alternative to bring in the students in time for the classes.

The driver experienced difficulty while  negotiating a steep curve , lost control and the bus overturned  just a few kilometers from the college.  There was chaos among the students who were screaming for help. It is also reported that  a lady lecturer who was pregnant was also among the passengers.  Fortunately the boy students rushed to the help of their college mates and pulled  the injured out of the toppled bus.

This accident  should be an eye opener to fleet owners.  Unless vehicles are not constantly maintained and kept in good condition, it will not be long before another similar tragedy occurs again.

This is very sad to see my college in such a situation..pa college was always a second home for me..but the irresponsibilities of the authorities have shatered my thought n view about the instituion. but 1 thing is to be noted by the students that the demands should be reasonable. authorities are sp good to the students then wat is the need for a students union now. anyway strike for the cause was good.

The staff/principal should realise that the safety of the students comes first and then comes conforming to the rules and regulations. The management needs to re-think its entire process.

It is sad that these things are still happening in modern India.Every vehicle in India should have an inspection test by an independepent authority like the way it is done in the UK. In the UK all vehicles have to undergo a complete 'HEALTH CHECK' on an yearly basis also called 'MOT'(Ministry of transport). This nonsense has been going on in India for the past 40 years. It is high time some one seriously sorted things out.

I strongly condemn this terrible act by the administrator of the college. I just dont understand how such a careless person can be a college admin. The Student welfare officer and the so called "admin" are responsible for this and legal action has to be taken against them immediately. They have played with the innocent lives of students and justice has to prevail. I completely support the students, in whatever step thay take. Afterall its their lives! Let them decide.

The strike seems more of a publicity stunt by students rather than a solution.

Is strike the only solution? The person called for the strike seems to be publicity hungry as asking for the press to be present. Please be aware due to the strike a lot others are put into inconvenience. There may be other alternatives for bringing the issue to notice of school management and improving the conditions.

The following conditions should be adhered to for college buses. 1.Regular maintenance which should be certified by authorized service centers. 2. Administration should utilize buses not older than 5 years. 3.There should be a fool proof arrangement for back up,whenever there is a vehicle break down 4.There should be a help line (telephone no.) available incase of emergencies. 5.The driver should be trained and buses should have speed governors.

  • Student of the same college, Mangalore

Being a student of the same college I went to the aid of my fellow college mates. As a car approached us on that stretch of road we signalled out to him for help in transporting one of the seriously injured, but the driver ignored our pleas for help and drove off. After sometime the same car comes around to check out the accident as though there's a show being put on. Maybe this pathetic-excuse-of-a-man apparently doesn't not want anyone to help him when he's in trouble. This is the way our local-ites are! How can people be so heartless! Don't they want to be treated well too? Doesn't everyone have a right to live??
