Udupi: Aged couple intoxicated by strangers in Matsyagandha Express, robbed

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (PS/SP)

Udupi, Aug 7: An aged couple native to Inna in Karkala taluk in the district was given substance mixed with intoxicants during their train journey from Thane near Mumbai to the city on the night of Saturday August 5 by some fraudsters. The couple lost cash and valuables worth four lac rupees in the theft which took place during their train journey before the couple arrived in the city.

Sanjeeva Shetty (61) settled in Thane and his wife, Rathna Shetty (56) had begun their journey by Matsyagandha Express at Thane at around 3.40 pm on Saturday. They had planned to get Rathna treated at Manipal hospital for neurological disorders. It is learnt that Rathna had got treatment at this hospital for this problem for a few weeks during May this year, and had planned to undergo further treatment now. They had boarded the S-2 sleeper coach of the train with cash and gold ornaments.

It is believed that a gang of youngsters who got into the compartment in which the couple was travelling, at Kurla station, were the culprits who drugged the two. The youngsters requested the couple to allow them to occupy window seats and the couple happily obliged, it is said. Reportedly the young men offered juice to Rathna and Sanjeeva Shetty, which they consumed and fell asleep almost immediately. The men are believed to have got down at Sawantwadi railway station in Sidhudurg district, Maharashtra after completing their act.

The couple's close relative, Harish Shetty Kadandale too was travelling by AC comparment of the train from Mumbai. The couple came to know that Harish was travelling by the same train whey they met him at the railway station. When Harish went to the compartment of the couple on Sunday morning to meet them, he found that they were not feeling well. By then the train had crossed Kundapur, and as soon as the train reached the city at 10.30 am, Harish arranged to take the couple to Manipal hospital with assistance of the railway protection force personnel. The couple are not yet in a position to speak because of the influence of drugs.

As per an estimate, the couple were robbed of Rs 50,000 in cash, gold ornaments weighing 65 grams, Rado watch valued at Rs 45,000, cellphones etc.

Sanjeeva has been operating a Paan Beeda shop at Thane. Both his sons too have settled down in Mumbai. A case about this robbery has been filed in Anjani railway station in Maharashtra.

Since last some years, incidents of intoxicating and robbing of people travelling by trains are being reported frequently, and the media and the police have issued repeated warnings against accepting food from strangers during train and bus journeys. The people believe that the railway have not been exercising enough vigilance to protect train travellers of this menace.

First the police should find out how did these strangers come to know that those couples we carrying valuables and heavy cash.

Not all the travelers will carry heavy cash and valuables. Then how can they perfectly target people carrying valuables. Its a mystery.

    Something fishy.

Very bad.such incidents are happeneing with elderly and even other people too in trains and even in buses travelling long distances. Many people are innocent and accept the friendly some toxicated biscuits or a simple juice. They dont doubt bad.Best is to avoid any loss of money is ,first dont carry gold when travelling or big amount of money with you, dont accept any friendly offer of coffee, juice ,water.buy self.just tell you dont tolerate it,have your own.when money is with you dont make it to show to other people.simple dress on journey is better. Not with jewellary,.Money should or can be withdrawn from account ,when you are in need later.few rupees for coffee or eatbles is enough..Even your credit card ,bank book hide it.no number is noted anywhere.Thats important.Sometimes to their bad luck, things do happen and you are clever later.Railway cant be made responsible.but a cctv,in all compartment ,and a guard should make rounds to see if any irregularitys or if someone need help etc.noted.

Boards should be put in compartments to Not Accept any food items from co passengers. Poor and Innocent people are being fooled in the "Quick Rich" schemes by crooks.
Investigations will be done only if you are well connected or else you have to bear your losses and be wiser.
Better to be safe than sorry.

It is most unfortunate that the aged couple was robbed after some idiot strangers or rather thieves intoxicated them with some juice mixed with drugs. The aged couple should not have taken the juice as we all know there are professional robbers in trains.

Let the government increase the fare of train and deploy more police personals for partrolling and working in shifts.

How many crimes in trains this year ???? In Saudi Arabia, every where police patrolling . Even in trains etc etc...

In case car breaks down, police personal himself will come for help and arrange for repair etc etc..such a gesture..Can we expect same in India ?

Railways should have list of passengers of same compartment. Bcos, they asked for window seat and off course they were travelling in same coach. Easy to find culprits now.

We are already paying so much in taxes and train ticket also well taxed. They should provide 2 armed security personals for each Bogie / Bogey
I don't mind paying little extra for that as well.

Every railway station has CC Cameras! If police and railway takes this incident serious...it is matter of hours to learn the shakal of these robbers! By the description of their looks, their boarding station and departing footage...it should not be a complex case before they return to repeat the same crime!
Aged pan beeda shop man having lost everything meant for his wife's treatment may not be able to warm / grease concerned....and hence the case may lose momentum unless Suresh Prabhu is alerted! I wish this news article will come into the notice of Railway Minister! Hope government takes this serious as they work for gaining power in the interest of common train commuters!
