Mangaluru: DK district to be declared open defecation-free in a month - Minister Khandre

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SB)

Mangaluru, Aug 8: State minister for municipalities and local bodies and department of public enterprises Eshwara Khandre on Tuesday August 8 said that Dakshina Kannada will be declared open defecation-free in a month's time, and once it is declared so, it will be the first district in Karnataka to have achieved this tag.

Addressing a press meet here after a meeting with the district administration and officials of local bodies, Khandre said, "The local bodies of Dakshina Kannada have succeeded in making the district open defecation-free. Within a month, after the verification of the reports submitted by each local body in the district, the government will declare Dakshina Kannada as the first open defecation-free district in Karnataka.

"Under the phase II of the 'Nagarothana Yojane', the government has provided Rs 35 crore to local bodies for various developmental works. After verification, we have come to know that 95 percent works have been done, and by end of August, the remaining five percent will be complete. The government has now approved a grant of Rs 81 crore for local bodies under the 'Nagarothana Yojane' phase III. Once the plan is ready, my department will give them permission to start the process of tenders. I am fully satisfied with the local bodies of this district. They have used the funds properly for developmental works and they have finished almost all the works on time," he said.

On the issue of solid waste management (SWM), Khandre said, "We have already instructed the local bodies to submit report on solid waste management. Once we receive the report, we will approve technology-based SWM. We are facing shortage of land in Kotekar and Vittal panchayats. I requested the deputy commissioner to provide additional land for SWM in these panchayats," he added.

"Local bodies in Karnataka are facing shortage of staff and officials. This is a serious matter and I have discussed the same with the chief minister. We are now trying to fill 2,500 vacancies in local bodies. We have instructed KPSC who will start the appointment process soon," informed the minister.

"We have introduced a mobile app called ‘Janahitha’. People using the app can submit complaints and suggestions. This app will also give the information on local bodies and their programmes and projects," he concluded.

Is it defecation free or defection free? The earlier is not at all possible unless strict enforcement and severe penalties including jail term for open defecation. In western country for open defecation is charges as indecent exposure and one will not only go to jail, but also termed as sexual offender whose name will be registered in national sex offenders registry. It is hard for those people to get a job or even to rent an apartment. Also pet owners have to pick up after pets and dispose it off properly or pay penalty.

Mr Minister, are you serious about this? On a lighter note, you are trying to take away the pleasure of individuals who relish the freedom of open defecation! Imagine sitting under the open sky early morning, a cool breeze wafting across your face, birds chirping happily and no worries in the world when performing a natural act of cleansing the body of toxic waste! Plus the pleasure of having an early morning walk away from your residence and chatting with fellow defecators (if any happen to be around). The hardcore ones would definitely not want to be denied their liberties.

It is really good news that we are moving towards some hygiene and eradication of this menace which is prevalent throughout India. Interestingly, Ahmedabad seems to have beaten all records in following Modi's lead - More than 70% use open spaces as toilets even after having several public urinals and toilets. I recently read an article were an entrepreneur offered, I think 2 rupees if anyone uses toilets in Ahmedabad. Yes, I read this article in international news website.

There are so many open drains near ksrtc bejai road, Kudroli and many more in DK. Spend money on either closing them with slabs or do something to benefit the public. Taxpayers money is being wasted hardcore. Look at the state of both Tarmac and Concrete roads. The Corporation keeps digging cutting and what and all and the final work is horrible. Again Corporation gets paid for companies to dig up the side roads to pass cables. Why then can't the corporation patch up or close these dug up sites? I urge the corporation to disclose to the public accounts of money being paid to them for all works and how much is actually spent on re doing them. Sad state Mangaluru is in.

Walk along any beach which is not touristy. Cross sultan battery and towards left, near Sasihitlu, Panambur, but not so crowded places. You will find these brown/dark brown stones that are very light-weight. They are not stones though.

Dont forget that people empty their bowels near or on the railway tracks and also the land that lies on either side of the railways. And also the bus stands early morning in remote locations of the bus stand. No one is talking about open urination on walls, bushes, trees and dark corners which is more rampant. This is a problem which is definitely not going to resolve in a month's time. Its just wishful thinking! Hasnt some agency some months ago certified Mangaluru as open defecation free? Then what is this all over again?

Rather do something to prevent toxic chemical waste from industries and garbage from entering the rivers and seas. We are consuming the same fish which feed on this toxic matter and then enter into our bodies and cause damage. And over a period of time, we start developing lifestyle diseases which are difficult to cure.

The news while reading is good but the amount spend on development is useless.
as they have given the contract to non fit technical contractor who doesn't know anything of gravity drainage system. the area were I reside the drainage system have been done but now people are saying no need of drainage system due to overflow of drainage due to wrong design of drainage system.
now people are suffering from bad smell, over flow of debris of human waste and lots of health issues. when contacted to concern person they said its problem for design.
is this way to make Mangalore clean city.
while developing city please choose right person or company to get it done.

The minister is waiting for the few who will take another month to finally give up the 'open-air' environment.

Congratulations to all for the hard work that went into the conversion.

But what about all those who live by the sea-shore? Has the minister consulted them before making the big announcement?

Perhaps the minister is keen to promote some success.

Promoting success - whether achieved or not - seems to be the mantra since the last 3 years. The disease seems to be catching on.

Hope eventually India catches up with the claims of the politicians.
