Bangalore, May 12: Yet again the IT city has proved that it is one among the leaders in the IT/BPO sector in India.
This was revealed in the latest NASSCOM – A T Kearney study 'Location Roadmap for IT- BPO Growth: Assessment of 50 leading cities' released this week.
The findings of the report on the assessment of 50 locations in India provides a detailed gap analysis, with advantages and shortcomings of the locations.
The study also dwells on the available opportunity for attracting investment from this sector with a deeper objective of showcasing a roadmap to achieve uniform economic development in India.
Bangalore along with Chennai, NCR (Gurgaon), Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai and Pune are classified as leaders. Based on the stage of development for ITBPO, the locations can be categorised into four groups - Leader, Challenger, Follower and Aspirants.
Ahmedabad, Bhubaneshwar, Coimbatore, Mangalore and Visakhapatnam are identified as the challengers to the leaders vying for the BPO market share.
While Aurangabad, Bhopal, Goa, Hubli-Dharwad, Kanpur, Mysore, Pondicherry are categorised as followers.
The cities where the IT-BPO activities are yet to take off like Dehradun, Durgapur, Guwahati, Ludhiana, Patna and Ranchi are categorised as aspirants.
Speaking about the rationale of the report, Som Mittal, NASSCOM president, says: “The development of only a few selected set of cities has put severe pressure on infrastructure, costs and also increased migration of resources. We see immense potential in the next set of locations, if the right steps are taken now. The growth projections of the industry indicate that even existing centres will see a significant growth. However, it would need proactive planning and meticulous execution to support this growth.”
Methodology used for the research was conducted by collecting and analysing data from 50 locations on over 100 metrics broken down in to several key parameters.
The parameters such as knowledge pool and skill-set availability, infrastructure, social and living environment, enabling business environment, government support and operating cost were used in the research.
