Taliban recapture key Afghan district

Kabul, Aug 10 (IANS): Taliban militants on Thursday recaptured a key district in Afghanistan's Paktia province, a security official said.

"Taliban rebels after heavy fighting once again captured the Jani Khil district," the official told Xinhua news.

Jani Khil district briefly fell to the Taliban fighters on July 25 but the government forces seized it after two days of fighting.

The police has confirmed that the security forces have retreated from the area in efforts to avoid civilian casualties.

More than two dozen people, according to fighting sources in the area, have been killed for the control of Jani Khil district over the past two days.
