Hassan, May 17: When most of the Konkani speaking people in Mangalore and other places are shunning their own native culture and traditions, it is indeed heartening to see the same being preserved and promoted here in the district which has only a few Konkani speaking people. Though Kannada is the main language here, efforts put in by Karnataka Sahitya Academy in the last couple of years to revive Konkani culture in this part of the state is now paying results gradually but steadily. Hassan Konkani Sanchalan has been leading this revival, which has now even pervaded the entire Chikmagalur district.

This was quite evident when CSI Grounds here hosted the first-ever traditional Konkani marriage of Hassan on Monday May 12. Prashanth D'Costa, the secretary of Hassan Konkani Sanchalan led from the front by marrying Hezil from Gonibeedu parish of Moodigere in traditional Konkani manner. The nuptials were held in St Anthony's Church here.

Prashanth dressed in traditional Konkani attire 'Todop, Kutanv and Urmal' arrived along with his relatives, friends, near and dear ones to the church on a procession. On the other hand Hezil too was clad in traditional dress 'Kirigi Baaju'. After the nuptial both arrived to the CSI Grounds on horse cart.

Earlier Prashanth's roce too was held in traditional manner with relatives offering 'vojim' and then gathering together for the roce.

It was indeed a praiseworthy pioneer effort to promote and preserve Konkani culture and traditions. While Konkani speaking in other places have made western rites, attire and traditions as their own for marriages and other functions, Prashanth has shown that adhering to the native traditions will go long way in preserving our own identity.

Well done Prshanth and Hezil. Congratulations and all the best for a happy married life ahead. Indeed it is a great wedding by following our konkani catholic tradition. One must revive this tradition for the benefit of our future generation. As Catholic families are becoming the slaves of western culture, good old tradition is dying. As wealth and money is gained our catholics find inferiority to bind to their culture. Many homes have forgotten the mother tongue even. I am proud with you all and expect our society to turn back to our culture and find an identity among ourselves. God bless you

This is in response to the negative comments by Mr. Vijay Lobo, Mangaore. Did he not see that the 'dedi' was a young girl and wore a traditional Indian attire (Shalwar Kameez). A saree would not have been appropriate for her age. We congratulate Prashanth and Hezil on their wonderful traditional Konkani Wedding Ceremony and I and my wife Monica wish them all the best in their married life. Dev Boren Korun!!

I do not know Prashant and Hazel but indeed I congratulate them on celebrating a great event in their lives in the traditional Mangalorean way as it existed several decades ago. I was quite excited to see people gathered together to sing the voyoos and following the custom of roce. When I was a child I have seen the damscus umbrella being used to protect the bridal couple from the sun and I saw it after decades again in the picture. Hai! and was it not wonderful to see the groom on the Horse showing his chivalry. I wish people in Mangalore follow this custom. It is such great tradition. Joe Gonsalves

Really wonderful to see marriages with such traditional celebrations. A reflection of Konkani culture is needed. Today, when everyone is going for modernisation, people like Prashanth and Hezil are needed to remind people of the rich Konkani heritage. May God bless you, Happy married life.

Great effort Prashanth. I appreciate & thank your family, friends & all who attended your wedding and supported you to show us, if you WILL, you can keep your culture alive. I am very happy to see the pictures on daijiworld. Thanks DAIJI for the great clips. We spend lavishly on weddings at the end just for no reason. I can see your wedding breathing. I can see there is life in the whole function. I can see the respect for culture. Thanks again for showing us our olden days.

I assume the marriage was celebrated in Konkany both in Church and home. I am only presuming as I hear on the other hand, that there is a standing 'dictat' by the bishop of Cikmagalur that no church services can be held or celebrated except in Kannada. This marriage certainly points in the right direction of people having the freedom of expressing themselves in their mother tongue. CC
