Hassan, May 17: When most of the Konkani speaking people in Mangalore and other places are shunning their own native culture and traditions, it is indeed heartening to see the same being preserved and promoted here in the district which has only a few Konkani speaking people. Though Kannada is the main language here, efforts put in by Karnataka Sahitya Academy in the last couple of years to revive Konkani culture in this part of the state is now paying results gradually but steadily. Hassan Konkani Sanchalan has been leading this revival, which has now even pervaded the entire Chikmagalur district.
This was quite evident when CSI Grounds here hosted the first-ever traditional Konkani marriage of Hassan on Monday May 12. Prashanth D'Costa, the secretary of Hassan Konkani Sanchalan led from the front by marrying Hezil from Gonibeedu parish of Moodigere in traditional Konkani manner. The nuptials were held in St Anthony's Church here.
Prashanth dressed in traditional Konkani attire 'Todop, Kutanv and Urmal' arrived along with his relatives, friends, near and dear ones to the church on a procession. On the other hand Hezil too was clad in traditional dress 'Kirigi Baaju'. After the nuptial both arrived to the CSI Grounds on horse cart.
Earlier Prashanth's roce too was held in traditional manner with relatives offering 'vojim' and then gathering together for the roce.
It was indeed a praiseworthy pioneer effort to promote and preserve Konkani culture and traditions. While Konkani speaking in other places have made western rites, attire and traditions as their own for marriages and other functions, Prashanth has shown that adhering to the native traditions will go long way in preserving our own identity.
