Mangalore, May 23: Mangalore City Corporation commissioner P K Subbayya has suspended a junior engineer of the Corporation for misleading the authorities and causing financial loss to the corporation.

The suspended engineer Nagendra N had given two false reports to the authority, certifying  that the road widening work from the house of Cyril Pereira to Badriya Jaumma Masjid in Jappinamogaru ward  had been executed and passed the bill to the contractor in question Krishna Kumble, resulting in a loss of Rs 78,666 to the MCC and in another report, had mislead the authority by wrongly stating that construction of road side wall, underground drainage and other repiar works  in Jeppinamogeru ward had been completed, resulting in payment a bill worth  Rs 86,965 to the concerned contractor, Amarnath.

The commissioner, who conducted spot inspection of these works, found that these works had not been executed and therefore ordered for suspension of the engineer for the violation of Karnataka Government Service Regulations, till further orders.

Based on a complaint filed by  City Development Standing Committee president and corporator Naveenchandra, two engineeres of the MCC are under suspension till further orders.

THe MCC Commissioner should open a site where the public at large can bring to his direct notice cases of 'suspected' malpractices by MCC staff so that he can get the same investigated by the concerned MCC corporator of the area whose report, verbal or written, can be acted upon by the Commissioner. The public must be assured that there will be no harassment by the lower MCC staff if they bring such cases to light.

I would like to congratulate the MCC Commissioner Shri PK Subbayya for the action taken by him. We had a case where a common garden built and tended to on private land by the residents of the locality was demolished by MUDA underlings under instructions from MCC because of pressure from political bigwigs. (the Court has confirmed that MCC had no authority to demolish this garden built on private land).

I appreciate the action taken by PK Subbayya. This is not a new case of malpractice .It has been common in MCC contracts. Not only one JE, but all other personnel from Chaprasi to Officers are involved in this type of payments to the contractors where as every one has been given a share .It is a big racket of Contractors and officials .The contractors and the middle men involved in this are also a to be punished.Licence of these contractors must be cancelled and no any work shall not be awarded in future to this contractors.
