200 Indian students marooned in Houston, 2 in ICU: Sushma Swaraj

New Delhi, Aug 28 (PTI): At least 200 Indian students were stranded at the University of Houston after the campus was flooded due to Hurricane Harvey, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said on Monday.

The minister said that two Indian students, Shalini and Nikhil Bhatia, are admitted in Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and that the Indian consulate general is reaching out to them to provide help.

More details on the students are awaited.

"@CGHoust has informed me that 200 Indian students at University of Houston are marooned. They are surrounded by neck deep water," she tweeted.

The Indian side made efforts for delivery of food but the US Coast Guard did not allow them as boats were required for rescue operations, Swaraj said in a series of tweets.

She said the MEA was ensuring that the relatives of the hospitalised students reach the health facility at the earliest.

"Mr. Anupam Ray our CG (Consul General) Houston is organising the rescue operations," she tweeted.

Harvey, the most powerful hurricane to hit the US in 13 years, left a trail of destruction as it swept through Texas on Sunday, pummelling the region with heavy rains and claiming at least five lives since making landfall on the US' Gulf Coast.

This is an extraordinarily unusual tragedy that has impacted the entire City of Houston with a massive hurricane followed by torrential rain that has made tens of thousands of people homeless. Everyone in the City has been affected. The roads have turned into rivers, even the highways have turned into lakes and waterfloods. Compulsory evaculation has been necessitated to many thousands of people from all sides. It is a tragedy indeed, but the worse may not be over yet.

Hundreds of Churches, Schools and Community centers have been turned into emergency shelters where food and water is lavishly provided. The rescue operations are extremely satisfactory. The City, the County, the State and the Federal authorities are doing everything possible they can to provide rescue help to anyone and everyone, including all our students - no one is left behind.

Houston is one of the finest City, well architecture with best of drainage, best of bayou systems where all the rain water and waste water is channeled for either recycling purpose or for draining the excess water to the ocean. The rescue operations are extremely good where tens of thousands of volunteers are readily offering their help and assistance to everyone, regardless who they are and where they are. Even the President and the First Lady are visiting Houston tomorrow to make sure that everything is in order for everyone that have been impacted by this massive tragedy. The media is too good to be true. The Law Enforcement Officers are extremely well trained and efficient for the rescue operations.

As always, prayer is the best healer in situations such as this. The tragedy thru the Act of God is too large to sustain. Hopefully the weather conditions may improve, but hurricane Harvey should come backi again, either Texas or Louisiana will be threatened once again. Please pray for us.
