Mangaluru: Renaming of Light House Hill Road - parties submit documents, reiterate demands

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Aug 30: The fact finding committee headed by additional deputy commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district, Kumar, which has been formed to look into the demands made by various parties relating to renaming of Light House Hill Road, met at the office of the deputy commissioner of Dakshana Kannada district on Tuesday August 29. It may be recalled that after the city corporation put through processes to rename this road as Mulky Sunder Ram Shetty Road in honour of the former chairman of Vijaya Bank, and it was approved by the ministry of urban development, objections had been received and different parties had staked their claims seeking to rename this road as St Aloysius College Road, Bavutagudda Road, and Idgah Road. The decision was put on hold at the behest of MLA, J R Lobo.

At its meeting, the committee collected supplementary documents from four parties who have been insisting that this road should be named as per their demands.

Representatives of Vijaya Bank Officers Organization said that they had obtained legal sanction for renaming this road after former chairman of their bank and that MLA, J R Lobo, had written to the government and secured a stay against the process of renaming the road. They noted that even the city corporation had approved the proposal to rename Light House HIll Road as Sunder Ram Shetty Road. Karunakar Shetty, Seethacharan Shetty, Raghuram Suvarna and Rajgopal Rai, who appeared on behalf of the organization, claimed to be in possession of all records to prove their claim and reiterated their demand to christen the said road as Sunder Ram Shetty Road.

Registrar of St Aloysius College, Prof A M Narahari, placing facts on behalf of his college, said that during the period the city was administered by municipality in 1976, a decision to name this road as St Aloysius Road had been taken during the period when late Blasius M D'Souza was its president. He said that this also finds a mention in the annual magazine of the college for 1976-77. As per the decision of the municipality, name boards had been installed near Higginbothams book store, library, and by the side of the road which turns towards St Aloysius College. He said that during the process of the municipality turning into city municipality and then city corporation, the resolutions passed by them earlier have gone missing. College principal, Dr Praveen Martis, was among the delegation of the college comprising several people.

Ashraf, president Union of Muslim Organizations, explaining about his demand to rename this road as Idgah Road, said that the Idgah mosque had been built at Light House Hill in 1798 and therefore it should be rightfully renamed as Idgah Road.

Leaders of 'Amar Sullia' organization said that this spot has special significance relating to freedom struggle in the region and that tricolour had been hoisted here during that period. They insisted that it would be apt to retain the name of the road as 'Bavutagutta Road' to keep memories of freedom struggle alive.

Fact finding commitee members, city corporation commissioner, Muhammed Nazeer, and head of Mangalore University's history department, Dr Udayakumar, were present. Speaking later, Kumar said that all the documents will be checked and historic facts will be scrutinized. He said that after this, the deputy commissioner will hand over the report containing the facts to the district in-charge minister and that a final decision will be taken by the minister.

The Committee should invite suggestions from interested public on the name game, by asking readers to send them to a specific website.
    That apart, it is my humble suggestion that best of both worlds could be achieved by: (1) retaining LHH Road name up to the edge of the present light house;
    (2) From there onwards with an arrow pointing to the direction of the St Aloysius College, the road could be named as St. Aloysius College Road;
    (3) at the bottom of the LHH road to Jyoti Circle, a road .
sign could be erected with an arrow pointing to Idgah mosque
    (4) A square bounded LHH ,and the mosque, Light House, and the St Aloysius College could be erected and named after the Vijaya Bank or its founder.

Finally, it is worth considering whether to forget all the above suggestions and name the road from the edge of the Light House Hill ,after the donor of the land on which St. Aloysius College was built - LOBO PRABHU ROAD. That would end the controversy. Lobo Prabhu, the donor has never been tangibly honoured and it is about tine; a mere plaque in the college building is not a fitting recognition; the College would have to find some other site than the imposing character of the land which it occupies.

Whatever name given, people like me still go by the "ORIGINAL" name.

Like MANGALORE will always be MANGALORE, whatever native language name it is changed to . So be it ! , Even the postman delivers letter if it says Mangalore and not Mangaluru or whatever name it gets in the future.

Same way, it will still be light house or SAC road on everybody's LIPS and MIND.

In 1960's roads were named .Those names do not exist now. So even if it is changed now, 20 years down the road it will be changed again. ...Times do change!!

But the ORIGINAL name will still stick around, due to it's PAST GLORY!!

If the contending parties cannot come to a consensus, then let the name remain as it was – Light House Hill Road - and on this pretext let the MCC repair and maintain the lighthouse which shall remain as a landmark for naming the road as well as a tourist spot for visitors.

Why are we wasting our precious time over this unimportant issue? There are so many important issues where our time and energy is needed. The other day some houses were badly affected because of natural calamities. Let us help them build the house. We will name those houses, like Vijaya Bank Kripa, Aloysius College Kripa, Idgah Kripa etc. Those who walk on the road or pass by vehicles do not bother in which road they pass. Simply disgusting to note the egoism of each party.

Prominence should be given to the Muncipality decision (1976) naming it as St.Aloysius College Road. Why all this confusion now? St.Aloysious College Road is a befitting name considering all aspects.

Are these institutions willing to maintain road properly at their cost if road named as they wish?

SAC is too big & renowned to lose any part of it's grand legacy over a road. I wish they had not gotten into this controversy. Respect is always better earned than demanded. Less said the better about claims of other parties over this issue.

    Azizudeen Road.
    Kadri temple Road,.
    Blasius D'Souza Road.
    Ganapati Temple Road.

Ganapati temple, Kadri temple, Blasius D'Souza, Azizudeen are not maintaining the roads.

The corporation is maintaining these roads.
St. Aloysius Church, School, College were exited prior to Sundar Ram Shetty was born.

Hence it is correct and proper to name as ST. ALOYSIUS ROAD.

Imagine what would happen if the roads mentioned and several others are now to be renamed. My first message is about renaming of roads and arguing over it.

There can be no end to renaming of roads and the issue we have now is about renaming a road that was renamed several years back. Yet... Light House Hill Road and Bavte Gudde remains popular. This is not because of lack of respect to St Aloysius Institutions.. it is just that a name sticks and then why bother changing it. The name and fame of St Aloysius College is not because a road was renamed after it.

Take issue with the Corporation over the condition of the roads, pavements, drains and public areas. The name of the road should be for address purposes only and not considered a matter of honour. If a private party wants the road named or renamed after it or some one of their choice, then let them pay for it. The city and its residents do not benefit from disputes of this type.

What or which one came first?
    - Light house
    - St. Aloysius School
    - Vijay bank
    - Bavta gudde
    - Idga
Try to carry on with historical name. Moreover, people are so used to lighthouse or Bavtagudde that they would keep calling the old name/s and new name may remain only in the name board and not in public tongues.

I am lost as to know how Vijaya Bank should get such a credit as to rename the road. Better name it FREEDOM ROAD or Aloysius Road. Another Option: Road going up until the college could be St. Aloysius College Rd. and descending part upto Jyothi could be Vijaya Bank Rd, no Fernandes or no Shetty.

Light House Hill Road is the right name. Vijaya bank founder name can be named to the roads where there is no names. LH Hill Road is the historical name and it should be maintained.

Retaining "Light House Hill Road", which is very well known and accepted by the general public, would be significant both historically and figuratively. While it will remind of the historical Light House, it will also figuratively point out to the St. Aloysius College, which is an Educational Light House that has illuminated the minds and spirits of thousands of its alumni. The cross road at the hill leading to the college may be indicated with a signboard "St. Aloysius College Road". The road leading to Vijaya Bank Staff Training College at Mulki may be rightly named after the Vijaya Bank or its Founder.
