Mangaluru, Sep 2: The Muhurat for new Konkani comedy drama ‘Koni Soma Nanth’ was held at Don Bosco Hall on Friday, September 1.

Fr Jawahar Cutinho of Bejai friary inaugurated the event by lighting the lamp along with drama director and artiste Dayan D’Souza Mukamar, founder of Daijiworld Media Group Walter Nandalike, actor Alwyn Pinto from Dubai, playwright Alwyn Andrade, director Dolla Mangaluru, vice-president of Konkani Natak Sabha Sunil Menezes, assistant director Jerome Moras and Judith D’Souza, secretary of Konkani Natak Sabha.

After receiving the script from Alwyn Andrade, Dolla Mangaluru said, “‘Koni Soma Nanth’ is the Konkani original version of Kannada drama ‘Ella Sama Atth’ written by Alwyn Andrade. The play in Kannada has already completed more than hundred shows. Konkani Natak Sabha every year stages a drama on its anniversary. For this year’s anniversary, we have selected this drama. It narrates a story of two families in same compound with full of comedy. Based on acoustics at Don Bosco hall, we had to bring in some changes in our dramas in the recent past. But some critics in social media came down heavily on us without understanding the realities. We will try our best to give good dramas with the facilities available.”

Alwyn Andrade thanked Dolla for choosing his drama. “Though I have staged many plays in Kannada, I have managed to write only one drama in Konkani, my mother tongue. I will try to write more. I am happy to see more plays being staged in Konkani in Mangaluru,” he said.

Fr Jawahar said, “Nowadays we can see U-turn in Konkani drama field. Many playwrights who had stopped writing dramas have now started writing again. Audience are also watching these plays with keen interest. From last few months, we have witnessed number of Konkani dramas staged here and various parts of our district. I request all directors to give more chances to young faces. Many youths have already started acting in various troupes. But the number should increase.”

Alwyn Pinto said that he was happy to see Konkani dramas getting prominence these days and promised his support for them.

Speaking on the occasion, Walter Nandalike said, “Directors and actors should focus on their performance and innovations on stage. Criticism is a part of public life. Actors or directors should not worry much about criticism all the time. If there is constructive criticism about the play, take it or else do not bother about it. I wish all success to this Konkani drama.”

Dayan D’Souza Mukamar said, “I am delighted to see new lease of life in Konkani drama field from past few years. Many new faces have emerged in short span of time. It is a good sign for Konkani stage. I also applaud the audience who have given tremendous support to stage plays,”

“Criticism is part of every field, more so in the literary arena. Criticism is not the end but a way forward to learn new techniques in writing and staging dramas. Stage artistes should always respect the constructive criticism. Negative criticism needs to be ignored as some always indulge in criticising everything and everyone. Artistes on stage should give first preference to their performance. Writers and directors should try to adopt new ideas and innovations,” he added.

Sunil Menezes welcomed the gathering. Judith D’Souza rendered vote of thanks. CGS Taccode compered the programme.

The play is produced by Konkani Natak Sabha and will be staged on Sunday, October 29 at Don Bosco hall at 5.30 pm.
