Bengaluru: Gauri Lankesh's activism earned her enemies, say former colleagues

Bengaluru, Sep 7 (IANS): Senior Editor and social activist Gauri Lankesh, who was shot dead on Tuesday night by unidentified assailants, was a "fearless" journalist but her "activism won enemies for her", said senior journalists and acquaintances who had worked with her for years.

She was "highly opinionated" and a woman of "strong conviction", according to the people who have known her over decades.

Ramakrishna Upadhya, a senior journalist who had known Lankesh for over 30 years, had worked along with her for eight years with the Anandabazar Patrika Group.

"When I worked with her, she was one of the most fearless persons and her writings used to represent all sides without biases," Bengaluru-based Upadhya told IANS here.

"After her father's death, she took over Lankesh Patrike and after a few years started her own Gauri Lankesh Patrike. This was when she turned into an activist."

"As journalists, we may all have our own political stances, but our writings need a balance. She lost this balance after a while," Upadhya said.

"A lot of times, she used to run unverified reports and turned purely into a critic of the Bharatiya Janata Party. She had unnecessarily created enemies for herself through activism," he added.

But as a person, Lankesh was very "warm" and "highly independent", he said.

"Around 20 years ago, she built a house for herself in Rajarajeshwari Nagar, which was right from then a very scarcely populated place and an almost dangerous place for a woman to come home late at night," he added.

"She should have taken precaution when she was aware of the threats," Upadhya said.

Ravindra Reshme, a senior Kannada journalist, says he has known the Lankesh family since July 1980, when P. Lankesh had started Lankesh Patrike.

"My association with the family goes way back to 1980 starting with Lankesh Patrike and I have worked with Gauri Lankesh for her Gauri Lankesh Patrike till 2007," Reshme told IANS.

"Lankesh had started the tabloid during the post-Emergency period, talking openly about political leaders and it was received very well across the state," he said.

"I had seen her marry her contemporary, Chidanand Rajghatta, also a journalist. They were two very strongly opinionated people and had later separated but remained great friends ever since," he said.

After Lankesh took over her father's paper following his death, she tried to bring "liberal" and "cosmopolitan" views to it, Reshme said.

The Maoist issue in Karnataka had forced Gauri and her brother Indrajit Lankesh, who were running Lankesh Patrike together, to split, he said.

"Gauri became an open sympathiser of the Maoists... although she didn't support their violence, she became very emotional towards their cause."

"The mistake that Gauri committed was to ridicule the Hindu groups. This irked even her followers," Reshme told IANS.

"But no one could question her courage of conviction and sincerity," he added.

Bengaluru-based social activist Prabha N. who was present at the Press Club here on Wednesday, said Lankesh always stood up for fellow women journalists.

"She was not only courageous but also shared that courage with fellow journalists and never hesitated when she had to stand up for one of us," she told reporters.

Many senior journalists and activists from across the country condemned Lankesh's killing.

"Shocked and angry -- after (Narendra) Dabholkar, (Govind) Pansare and (M.M.) Kalburgi, journalist Gauri Lankesh bravely writing against Sangh (Parivar), shot dead in Bengaluru," tweeted Kavita Krishnan, the Secretary of All India Progressive Women's Association.

"In India we bow to frauds like Ram Rahim and kill men and women of reason and inquiry like Pansare, Dabholkar, Kalburgi and now Gauri Lankesh," tweeted senior journalist Barkha Dutt.

Lankesh, 55, was shot dead by three unidentified men who fired seven bullets at her when she returned home from her office in the city. Two hit her in the chest and one in the forehead.

The manner in which Lankesh was shot dead was reminiscent of the way Kannada progressive thinker and researcher M.M. Kalburgi was killed in August 2015 at his residence in Dharwad in the state's northwest region, about 400 km from Bengaluru.

When people allow themselves to be guided by blind hate, their brains turn to mush. Not only do they lose their better judgment (if they ever had any), they also often end up sabotaging their own case.

The latest illustration of this phenomenon comes, unsurprisingly, from the cesspool of vileness that is right-wing social media.

Shortly after journalist and activist Gauri Lankesh was shot dead by unknown assassins in front of her home in a Bengaluru suburb on Tuesday evening, the usual suspects crawled out of the woodwork to defame and cast aspersions on a woman who had been murdered in cold blood.

Amid the thousands of voices that condemned the dastardly killing was an unmistakable clamour justifying her end. Proud foot soldiers of the ultra-right took up arms against Lankesh, who vocally criticised their ilk. Some of these "trolls" happen to be followed by none other than Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Twitter. One claimed to be working with the ministry of information technology as a "social media advisor". Another woman, who celebrated Lankesh's death, was allegedly a journalist with national television channels.
For the last several years, Gauri actively worked in rehabilitating Naxalites to the mainstream. Several of them, including former Naxal leader Sirimane Nagaraj surrendered to the state in December 2015, thanks to her tireless efforts — as did others like Rizwana Begum, Parashuram, Padmanabha, Chennamma, Shivu, Bharathi and Kanyakumari, before the Chikmagalur district administration.

It may be news to the troll brigade on social media, but by working with former Naxals, Lankesh was only taking forward the Central government's policy to rehabilitate extremists who wanted a second chance. In 2014, the Modi government introduced a rehabilitation package to bring left-wing extremists into the mainstream.
it's hard to appreciate such nuance for those who are blind-sided by bigotry.

Only cowards who have lost the battle indulge in violence. Her only weapons were her voice and her pen. If what she spoke or wrote was wrong, you too had your voices and your pens to beat her. You had the courts and the justice system to question her and punish her if she was wrong. The very fact that you have indulged in an act of cowardice and killed her is because you know that she was winning and you could not counter her with arguments, or reason, or the truth that she believed in. You think by killing unarmed people you have won a victory and are gloating. You are seriously wrong, and you know that you are wrong. Deep inside you, your own rotten conscience must be making you vomit. All that you have done is awakened the conscience of the sleeping masses, who hate you and your rotten guts and see you as you are. A bunch of shameful, miserable weaklings and cowards.

Most of us concluding that She killed because she was writing against Hindu religion and Killers should be from Hindu Organisation. Same thing done during death of M.M. Kalburgi. But failed to identify Killers. This happened because investigation went on in single notion. As these activists involved in so many activities and with so many people, investigation should go in all angles. Early conclusion without proof makes investigation fail. Hope it will not in Gouri Case.

Mocking Hinduism and degrading Hindus has become a fashion for most of the SICKULARS and journalists and take pride in doing so. How can one justify her supporting JNU antinationals who are openly destabilizing India by supporting militants in Kashmirs and Naxalities.

If any true Hindu listens to the recent video she makes about Hindus, his blood will boil.

It is sad she was killed but she took her own risk and paid for it

Killing a person is unacceptable and barbaric. It is very unfortunate we see these kind of incidents.

But few of the below points i feel is worth the discussion.

    1. It is better if all these activists understand the reality on ground before they talk whatever they wish in hard way.
    2. They should concentrate on their purpose rather than carried away with strong words.
    3. Our society or the place we are living has not matured enough to absorb all sorts of hard words.
    4. There are few elements in our society that take these words in other sense and retaliate violently and our system or police is not full proof to prevent all these eventualities.
    5. I would believe these journalists/activists know the society they are living in better than we people and should not enter into risks knowingly.
    6. They should be equally aware that always soft words will win over hard words in convincing the people, the ideology they believe or the truth they want to convey.
    7. It is all of our responsibility to mature our society to accept criticism in the right spirit. But till then restraint is required.

That is very true, She earned her enemies.
She need not believe in Hindu religion.
She had no business to hate/ insult any religion in public speech.
During her recent TV interview she said Hindu religion is fake.
She said only Islamic and Christianity are true religions.
No one would have stopped her converting to any religion.
Why should she insult any religion ?
There is no proof that one region is better than other.
All the religions preach the same thing.
    People interpret in different ways.
People who hate any religion have not understood/read their on religion

Don’t know how many of those comment here have read her articles. If you read it, they are abusing and using foul language and targeting only particular person/organization/religion/caste.
There is nothing positive in her articles and it is only masala. If this is called as progressive thinking, then Kalladka Bhatta is nothing in front of her.

There are many reasons behind Gauri's murder.. One of the reasons might be Naxal connection..She became mediator and forced some Naxal leaders to surrender to Police..That upset one section of Naxal Group..Even in her last tweet, she wrote "We have to stop fighting among us " ...Anyway, her brother Indrajit Lankesh wanted CBI Investigation..But, Siddu wanted SIT investigation...Let us wait and watch..
