Udupi, Sep 9: Udupi district and sessions judge has sentenced life imprisonment for two persons in the murder of Kemmannu resident Shakuntala and for robbing her ornaments.

The robbery and murder had taken place on June 24 in 2012.

Harish Poojary (37) and Santhosh Poojary (36) are the convicts. Shakuntala was the aunt of Harish Poojary.

The then police circle inspector S V Girish had investigated the case and Maruti G Nayak had submitted the charge sheet to the court.

T S Jithuri earlier and Shanti Bai had presented arguments on behalf of the prosecution.

Accused Harish Poojary was facing financial hardship. Therefore, he had planned to rob Shakuntala.

Shakuntala was alone in her house at Gundya, Kemmannu at about 2 pm on June 24 in 2012. Harish who came there then, had asked the mobile number of Jayanthi, elder sister of Shakuntala. When Shakuntala was looking in the address book, Santhosh Poojary caught her neck. The duo then dragged her to the room and asked her for jewellery. When she refused, they squeezed her throat, killed her by tying and tightening churidar shawl around her neck and took away gold ornaments and two mobile phones from there.
