Mangaluru: Six-year-old crushed by moving train near Jeppu railway gate

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangauru (SP)

Mangaluru,Sep 24: A six-year-old boy who was crossing the railway tracks near Jeppu Mahakalipadpu railway gate on Saturday September 23, was struck by a train. The victim was Muhammed Hussain Hafil (6), son of Anwar and Shameena couple living at Mahakalipadpu.

The ill-fated boy was a second standard student of Cassia St Rita English Medium School, Jeppu in the city. At about 3.30 pm on Saturday, Hafil had visited a shop nearby for buying toffees. He was crossing the railway tracks near the railway gate near his home, when an express train moving towards north India ran him down. After hitting the boy, the train dragged the boy for a distance of nearly 80 metres. The body of the boy was badly mutilated in the accident. Although people who saw the accident rushed to the rescue and took the boy to a hospital immediately, he had breathed his last by then.

Hafil's younger brother, four-year-old Junaid, too had accompanied is elder sibling to the shop for buying toffees. Two other boys were also with this duo. Although mother of the two, Shameena, had instructed them to buy toffees from a nearby shop, as that particular shop was found closed, the four boys had crossed the railway tracks and gone to another shop through Masjid Road. When returning, Junaid and two other boys, who were ahead of Hafil, had crossed the railway tracks. Hafil saw them crossing the tracks and ran to join them but before he could safely reach the other side, a speeding train knocked him down.

Hafil's family happens to be very poor, and his father, Anwar, had left for a foreign country to work about six months back. Anwar works as driver in Saudi Arabia. Hafil was the eldest of three sons of Anwar.

A case about the incident stands registered in railway police station here. There is a shop by the side of the railway tracks but there is no protective fencing for the tracks. Trains which move to the city junction station from the direction of Kerala and vice versa move on this stretch of the tracks at high speed and pose substantial risk to people crossing the tracks at this stretch.

RIP Little Angel, so sorry to hear of your sad demise.

Children should never cross railway tacks on their own, nor should they be left unsupervised on the street without a parent or guardian.

How many times I've been driving around avoiding children wandering on the streets on their own without any adult supervision.

Indians are beyond hope. There is absolutely no hope for this nation. Not in the near foreseeable future at least. We are filled with this 'chaltha hai' attitude. Only when something like this happens we wake up to a dose of reality. These kids must be walking along almost on a daily basis. If citizens are really responsible, they must discourage them going around unattended by an elder. Better still, assist them in crossing the track. Scold them if need be not to venture out on the tracks. Not even the shopkeeper cares. He just wants his 2/- for toffees probably. In India nobody really cares. No use pointing fingers. The govt is also made by us. We only talk, text and type few days. That's it.
A railway line cannot be fenced along all the course.
Even if a gate is put, these young kids can walk below it and easily pass by. Heck, two-wheeler riders get to the other side from under the gate!
What happened is unfortunate but the fact is there is nothing anyone can do about it. The sooner we realise it the better for us. It's gonna take a long time for Indians. Rest in peace Hafil. You're definitely in a better place...

A word of advice to our Railway Ministry, Please focus on basic safety before you launch bullet trains. Our railways lack basic infrastructure in our country, but we obsessed with economically unviable Bullet trains.

Why Central government taking taxes? For PMs and Presidents(BJPs or Congs) foreign tours? Giving luxury life to Politicians?
Why cant they provide simple safety in railway tracks specially near residential areas and Railway gates ?

Do we need Bullet trains or provide safety and security in exiting railway system?

According to me next election in 2019 everyone has to press NOTA button. We want Leaders who works for public not taking public money and living in luxury.

    Dear Mam
Here the parents should be blamed not the government. I feel boy is still six years old and he should have been instructed by the elders. Most of the time, I have seen in malls if there are more than 3 childrens then the parents are least bothered about their childrens . They does not even look back to see where their childrens are. There are so many incident where childrens are left alone and later handed to their parents.

Note the father is in Saudi Arabia. So you cannot say PARENTS. The mother was the guardian (father and mother too) in his absence. Let us not touch on this.

I differ from your views. We cannot accuse the parents for his death. How could you blame OR expect a 6 year old to remember warning advises from the parents unless he was staying in the vicinity of the railway tracks. You have to primarily take into consideration the geographical location of their residence because he was coaxed by his friends and accompanied them.

Rather I would blame his friends for having deserted him resulting in his death AND the Railways too for lack of safety provisions.

These are just some of the cases reported.

    Dear Joseph,

I ride via that road everytime. My ride is either distracted by goats or these children. Even i suggest you take a ride from this route. No doubt even you will be haulted someday. My opionion was that if the parents would have taken some measures then the child could atleast be saved from such an incident.

What was the safety element missing here? Did the train go off the track to hit the boy? Was it unmanned railway gate? No, People just cannot let their small kids on their own to cross tracks like this and blame the government.

Did the train go off the track ?

Its happening nowadays across country. Modi government failed in safety of railways and railway tracks.

Railway safety means : Safety inside trains, Tracks and gates.

Train accidents have happened during UPA regime also if you want to debate on statistics we can compare both the regimes on train accidents but that's a different issue. Here we are speaking about the responsibility for this boy's death. And clearly the parents are responsible that's it.

Dr. Anitha, Dubai/Mangalore: Cute boy lost the life. RIP.

Is it not the responsibility of the parents/guardians when the children go out and cross the track . Do you expect Mr Modi of Central Govt. or Mr Siddaramiah of State Government to be after everybody in day to day life matters of the citizens.

Just take the ride on the Mangalore-Bangalore National highway on the double road between Mangalore-BC Road at Kannur and Faraingipete and you see how people cross the road inspite of providing OVERBRIDGE between these two points. Many times people including the Auto rickshaw, Bikes come on the opposite direction which you can least expect and they start arguing with you when they are told about it. This is what I have seen when I use the highway.

So even they are provided helicopter or underpass beneath the track, they do not make use of it. Stop blaming the Governments when people are beyond redemption. JAI HIND

Mr Karthik, Mangalore: I use that road to move to highway. Even when the Gates are closed at the manned level crossing at JEPPU, Mahakallipadpu at the same spot, people with two Wheelers pass under the barricade when the train approaching. One Two wheeler person would have lost his life there right in front of my eyes. This was When I was waiting for the Gate to open. People do not have patience to wait. Even God comes from heaven, people will not care. Let the people see for themself. JAI HIND

Mr. Edward Monteiro , you are right, people should learn to obey rules and regulations. How many people wear helmets while riding or being pillion? How many of them still drink and drive. How many people overtake from the wrong side, how many jump traffic signals or change lanes without indicators or even drive vehicles without functioning head or tail lamps . We need to look within rather than blame game all the time. This applies to all even pedestrians, Jay walking , walking with headphones or looking at mobiles not using zebra crossing or foot overbridge at junctions and instead jumping dividers are all very common in our society. We cannot blame government for our mistakes.

    Madam,
What has happened is indeed very sad and tragic. But I do not fully agree with you. Here blaming central or state governments cannot solve the problems. First and foremost it is the duty of the local residents to ensure that such dangerous places are properly fenced and there is an over bridge for pedestrians. It is the duty of the local corporator to see that such basic facilities are provided to the people residing in his/her ward. Corporators / MLAs / MPs who do nothing for the benefit of their respective wards / constituencies should be shown the door in the next elections.
