Mangalore: Monsoon Menace Begins - House Damaged, Highway Jammed

Mangalore, Jun 7: The monsoons have just begun and already the city is facing the wrath of heavy rainfall. A house was partially damaged when the retainer wall of neighbour’s backyard collapsed on Friday June 6 night, owing to heavy rains.
The house, located on the outskirts of city at Gollarabettu near Akash Bhavan belonged to a certain Pandurang. The house was partially damaged when the retainer wall belonging to a certain Chandrakant collapsed. The loss was estimated to be around Rs 1 lac.
Gridlock on National Highway:
The sea shore from Chota Mangalore to Someshwar has come under extreme sea erosion, as the large tidal waves are threatening the vegetation including coconut trees which are likely to be uprooted at any moment.
The dirt roads that come under the jurisdiction of local village council including asphalted roads maintained by municipal body are also damaged, owing to flash floods since adequate provision of storm water drains were not made or they have not been cleared of silt ahead of monsoon.
Flash floods have occurred on either side of Mangalore – Udupi national highway from Nantoor to NIT-K Suratkal. The motorists were stuck in a traffic gridlock for over two hours while pedestrians had to hop their way across puddles.
The school children passing by Mangalore – Ernakulam National Highway 17 are apprehensive of walking besides NH, since the pool of rain water accumulated in the absence of storm water drains. The locals fear for the safety of school children while going to their schools.
Udupi report:
Heavy rains which lashed on Friday night had damaged nearly 10 houses located at Padubaikady near Brahmavar and Kelarkala near Santekatte.
Electrical appliances including TV were damaged when lightning struck the house of Veerabhadra Naika, bus driver and resident of Padubaikady, near Brahmavar. The electrical wiring of neighbouring residences belonging to Anwar Saheb, Narayan Poojary, Manjunat Achar were also totally damaged.
Gram panchayat president Jayaram Shetty, village accountant Anand Damle and MESCOM officers have visited the site and evaluated the losses. Jayalaxmi, wife of bus driver Veerabhadra and another woman were also affected by lightning strike.
In another incident, the tiled roof of a certain Girija Achary, resident of Kelarkalabettu village, located in Santekatte was blown away by heavy winds and asbestos sheets of the house of Vanitha Achary, located in the vicinity was also damaged.
