Udupi, Jun 7: Noted press photographer Astro Mohan has won the third place in the Clean India Photo Awards 2008, organized by WES-Net India. It is the country's first sanitation award for photojournalists, held between March 20 and June 5.
Astro Mohan is not only a well-known photojournalist but also a magician, an astrologer, a palmist, an orator, an artiste and an art critic. His deep academic interest in astrology earned him the prefix 'Astro.'
He has documented the cleaning workers for 15 years in Udupi and has earned national and international recognition for the same.
About the Awards:
The idea of the awards was conceived given the negligible coverage given by the media to problems of sanitation and water management. The idea aims at creating awareness, learning and cooperation through media among the general public, professionals and policy makers. This initiative was a part of WES-Net India’s efforts to promote 2008 as International Year of Sanitation in India.
To be eligible for the awards, photojournalists across India had to publish photographs on the theme of sanitation with a title and a caption, which describes the context in
newspapers/magazines from World Water Day, which was observed between March 20 and March 27 this year.
The first prize was bagged by Tamil photojournalist A M Sudhakar, while the second prize went to Sudhanshu Malhotra who is freelancing with Civil Society and Time Out.
