Udupi, Oct 1: An activist of government's 'Asha' scheme was electrocuted at Kodikanyana near Sastan in the taluk on the evening of Saturday September 30. The victim was Shreemathi Poojary (50), a local.

Shreemathi was in the habit of collecting green grass for her cow from the agricultural field near her home. As was her practice, she left her home at around 4.30 pm on Saturday to collect grass. She did not notice that a live electric wire had fallen in the field. The live wire got entangled in her leg and Shreemathi lost her life instantly.

Her family members began to search for her only after 6.30 pm when they noticed that she did not return at her usual time. They could not come near the body as it was about two hours since the lady was attached to the power cables, and the area had electric current. Power supply was severed later and it was found that both the legs of Shreemathi had been badly burnt. She was taken to hospital where the doctors confirmed that she was no more.

Shreemathi's daughter's marriage was to take place on Monday October 2. In this connection, a Mehndi programme was to take place on Sunday. Since the past few weeks Shreemathi was busy arranging the marriage function, and some relatives and friends had already arrived at her home for the marriage. This catastrophe brought on a pall of gloom in the village.

The deceased has left behind two daughters. Locals said that the cable which got severed and fell to the ground was very old and had not been replaced. A case of unnatural death was registered in this connection at Kota police station.
