Mangaluru, Oct 6: Personnel of city (north) traffic police station here have, in a measure that is meant to deliver a message that they will not show lenience in cases of deaths due to drunken driving, have applied stringent provisions in one such case.

Anil Kumar (30) from Bokkapatna, who was riding a scooter, was killed after a car hit his vehicle at great pend at the Tannir Bavi road diversion at Kulur on national highway on Wednesday October 4. The scooter rider had died on the spot. During their investigation, traffic police found that the car driver, Susvith (25) was drunk at the time and his car was moving at high speed. Because he was intoxicated, instead of driving on the left lane, he had driven his car in the right lane after losing balance of mind.

After realizing the seriousness of Sushvith's action, the police have registered case against him under section 304 of Indian penal Code relating to culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The traffic police have handed over the case to Panambur police for further action. The accused stands produced in a court.

The scene of the accident bore evidence to the gravity of the accident. The body of the youth had been badly mutilated, and his brain had come out while even hands and bones of the legs had got separated from the body. The car had dragged the scooter for about a hundred metres, which showed that the car was at high speed. Traffic station police inspector, Manjunath, said that the police want to send a strong message to drunk drivers who pose serious threat to road users.
