Godhra train burning: Gujarat HC commutes death sentence of 11 to life term

Ahmedabad, Oct 9 (PTI): The Gujarat high court commuted the death sentence of 11 convicts in the 2002 Godhra train carnage case to life imprisonment on Monday.

The high court also upheld the life sentence awarded by the special SIT court to 20 others in the case.

Fifty-nine ‘karsevaks’ were killed in the Godhra train burning incident of February 27, 2002, triggering the worst communal riots in the history of Gujarat.

A division bench of Justices Anant S Dave and G R Udhwani of the high court pronounced the judgement on appeals filed by the convicts as well as the prosecuting agency.

The special SIT court had on March 1, 2011 convicted 31 persons. The trial court sentenced 11 persons to death and 20 others to life imprisonment, while acquitting 63 others.

The high court also ordered the state government and the railways to pay a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the kin of those killed in the train burning incident.

In spite of the center being BJP, the supreme court took an independent decision on basis of evidence and cause for the carnage. In Pakistan people are hanged/lynched for lessor crimes of blasphemy. Good lesson for Paki lovers.

Each and every time, innocent people die and one side blames the other.

The root case of discord is 'hate', and only love will save the world. Unless Indians in particular, and the people of the world in general unite against hate and all its manifestations, we will see a repeat of Gujarat's over and over, all over the world.

Why this carniege let it happen in the first place and not doused in the beginning itself without pointing fingers at anyone and being biased ??????. It was the full responsibility of then CM and home minister of the state to see and put an end to this flaring up situation unless otherwise they played a major part in it. There is no question of asking any other state for help or acting to be helpless. If they wanted and intentions were clear there was all the help available within them or from the centre as India has fought many wars and quite capable of handling this internal crisis.

Maybe you do not know the history, this was a planned secret operation done by few people. Good that law has kept up with this.
Instead of complementing the judgement,as usual you find fault in the CM

Indeed it was a planned operation of the rulers of the state. Govt showed no leadership when it started, during or when it ended on its own to contain the situation. It is impossible to carry out an operation of this magnitude by any non political body.

Friends you all are educated and you all know why the 2002 riots happened so when commenting try to give your honest opinion don't target only Hindus .What if it had happened to your community in first case will you leave any one.its sad after that so many innocent lost their life. state government asked help from neighboring states which was ruled by congress no govt had been responded for the request .so why all blame to modi ? FOR EVERY ACTION THERE IS OPPOSITE REACTION.If they did not burn the godhra train.Nothing would have be happened.2002 riots was congress planned game.

It was the not question of...if this happened to your community .... The question is how and why it was started... Just Google and find out , why the certificate was issued to the Gujju.... why USA made him to wait for 12 years to issue visa.... Smoke will not come without fire ....

If you know the persons who started the trouble, hit them hard... why are you killing the innocents on the road .... Hope this is not the DNA of Indian politics .

Name 11 culprits. At least society will come to know who is behind such acts.

Hanging or punishing puppets won't actually work unless you catch hold on to real culprits .This verdict for me is as useless as anything else. All fingers pointing towards main culprit or mastermind.
