We are against cow vigilantism, attacks on Dalits: Gujarat CM

New Delhi, Oct 15 (IANS): Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani on Sunday said his government was against cow vigilantism despite ensuring protection for cows.

"We do not support those who commit violence in the name of 'gauraksha'. Action will be taken against those responsible," Rupani said in a programme organised by India TV.

"At the same time, the government is ensuring protection of cows for which we have a law, which is the strictest in the country. It also has the provision for life sentence."

Speaking on attacks against Dalits, Rupani said: "It is wrong. Cases are filed immediately and immediate action is taken. It is our responsibility to protect Dalits... We are ensuring safety and welfare of Dalits in Gujarat. That is why they support the BJP."

Rupani added that his government had started withdrawing cases filed against Patidars. "We have already withdrawn 300 cases so far."
