Dubai, Jun 15: Here’s some good news for theatre lovers of the region. Dhwani Pratishtana is all set to present popular Kannada play ‘Hayavadana’, on Friday, June 20, 2008, at 5.30 pm at the Indian Consulate Auditorium in Dubai. Entry is free.
Directed by Prakash Rao Payyar the play, which tells the story of two friends—Devadutta and Kapila, will have local artists enacting the different roles. Devadutta is a learned poet while Kapila is knowledgeable only by association with his intelligent buddy. But what he lacks in brain power, Kapila makes up for with his active lifestyle, and a well-toned body.
The storyline has Devadutta falling in love with the beautiful Padmini who drives him to such madness that he pledges his hands to Goddess Kali and his head to Lord Rudra if the deities bring him the damsel. He sends his friend Kapila to Padmini to seek her hand on his behalf, and she readily agrees to the proposal.
Briefly, the thought that he might be a better match for Padmini does cross Kapila’s mind. Eventually Devadutta and Padmini get married but with the passing of time the former suspects that his wife is more appreciative of Kapila’s qualities.
This makes Devadutta uncomfortable and he starts disliking himself. Kapila, who is blissfully unaware of his friend’s suspicions, goes about being honest and well-intentioned.
While on a journey to Ujjain, Devadutta is unable to contain his jealousy and goes for a solo visit to the nearby Kali temple. What happens thereafter is something you can find out for yourself on June 20.
The presentation will also have a ‘bhagavataru’ who is a narrator of sorts and is more commonly found in Yakshagana performances. Yet another character to watch out for will be the horse-faced ‘hayavadana’ who fulfils the role of a jester.
