Refused food for not linking Aadhar to ration card, 11-year-old girl dies of starvation

Ranchi, Oct 17 (Huffington Post): Activists alleged that PDS outlets in Jharkhand's Simdega district refused to give ration to a family, since their ration cards had gotten cancelled for not being linked to Aadhaar. Eleven-year-old Santoshi Kumari allegedly died of starvation on 28 September, after going without food for eight days.

In an exclusive report, Scroll found out that in Simdega's Karimati village, the local dealer had been refusing to give ration to the Kumari's family, saying that their ration card wasn't linked to Aadhaar and hence was no longer valid.

The family does not have Aadhaar cards. Non-profit organisations Right to Food Campaign and NREGA Watch discovered that the PDS outlet had taken off the name of Koyli Devi, the child's mother, along with those of 10 other families as their cards were not linked. Activists confirmed with Jaldega block office that Koyli Devi's card had indeed been cancelled. The activists placed a request for a new card explaining the circumstances, but the card arrived two weeks after Santoshi's death.

In February this year, the Centre made it mandatory to have Aadhaar numbers to access subsidised ration under the Public Distribution System (PDS). The victim's mother said that since school was shut for Durga Puja holidays, Satoshi didn't have access to the mid-day meals she usually had. The girl's father is not sound of mind and her mother and sister makes no more than Rs 80-90 a day cutting grass for others, reports Scroll.

Government officials, however, have argued that Santoshi died of malaria, not starvation.

Not just subsidised ration, the February 28 notification from the government also made it mandatory for children to have Aadhaar cards for access to mid-day meals in government schools. In August this year, Hindustan Times reported that only 42% children in the state have enrolled for Aadhaar. It also said that according to a notification from the Union ministry to Rajasthan government, the deadline for enrolling into Aadhaar was 31 August, 2017. Hindustan Times reported that 37 lakh students in 49,000 government schools in the state ran the risk of being denied mid-day meals if they did not get enrolled under the Aadhaar scheme within the stipulated deadline.

Denying food by PDS outlet for not linking ration card with Aadhaar is a very mean and inhuman act on the part of the concerned authorities. Here the poor family possessed a ration card. What kind of system are we living in? Has humanitarianism totally disappeared from the country? In places like Kundapur outsiders are in possession of local ration cards. Who issued them aadhaar cards? At least the govt. must make some provision to provide minimum ration to those who have ration cards.

This govt is has no other work than asking citizens to link aadhaar for each every thing. There are lots of people in villages who do not have aadhaar. To get aadhaar people have to stand in queue for several days or take appointment in post office . In some post offices appointment has been pre booked for next 3 months. A daily wager has to cancel all his work and wander around aadhaar centers to get his aadhaar . So for those days he lost his income also and he has spend to go to aadhaar center. Then after getting it also one needs to go multiple times to link aadhaar to certain things, because in many places finger print scanners do not work or network down or so many other reason due to which aadhaar linking fails.

This is really becoming a big pain for people. This BJP govt is a worst govt in implementing schemes.

    Dear Jeevan,
You were the hard core supporter of Modi before at least started understanding the pain of poor people in India. He demonetized aiming UP elections not for the benefit of this country. He had no any good plans for this country. BJP criticized adhar while it implemented now adopted it. GST implemented in hurry burry like demonetization screwed up whole economy. His dictatorship of ruling with useless ministers around him is the big disaster of this country. All balck money systematically converted and corporate sector benefited by this government. BJP was very good party before when it run by Vajpayee & LKA with good experienced senior ministers like jaswanth Singh, Yashwanth Sinha, MM Joshi etc.. Now these two Gujju's hijacked such a party and looting the way they wanted.

This government is linking aadhar to all sundry things without proper system in place. Also privacy of citizens of India is compromised. Wait how aadhar linking to bank accounts and mobile sim will create problems to common man for no fault of his or her. Already there are several reports of fraud based on aadhar card.

Imagine a 11 year old girl student dying due to starvation in our India of today under the 3rd year rule of our erstwhile PM!

Now tell us dear PM that SG and RG did not allow these people to link their Aadhar cards or issue them with one.

'only 42% children in the state have enrolled for Aadhaar' What happens to the remaining 58% children? will they ultimately die of starvation too?

We need answers and we need solutions; We Indians did not vote you to office to kill us with starvation.

Time for supreme court to take note of the situation & direct action. Not linking voter id to aadhar to veed out feku voeters is OK for the government. But, delay in linking aadhar is not OK even for poor & needy. What a pity !!!
