Mangaluru, Oct 23: The flyover work at Pumpwell Circle in the city where national highway 66 and 75 meet, has been progressing at a snail's pace, and this delay had attracted public wrath many a time. Now, because of defect in workmanship, one of the girders has developed cracks. As such, machines have been deployed to break this girder. The indications about the flyover work getting further delayed as against the current deadline of March end next year, are clear and loud on account of this development.

The girders are manufactured by contractors which are then carefully fitted to the slots where flyover is being built. As some cracks were observed in one of the girders fitted here, this girder is being replaced now. Currently, this girder is being removed.

It is learnt that officials of National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) found out the crack during their inspection. It is said that a small crack appeared in the girder because of the mistake in fixing the girder. The girder is now being vacated as per the instructions of the officials and the contracting company has to fix new girder now.

After the delay of Pumpwell flyover work became laughing stock in social websites, MP, Nalin Kuma Kateel, at a meeting he convened in the company of NHAI authorities, had instructed the officials to speed up work and finish it soon. The officials had said that the flyover would be opened for public by the end of March. Considering that only a little more than 25 percent of the work has been completed till now on this flyover, there are doubts about the concerned meeting this deadline.

As this 600-metre 20-metre-wide flyover is being constructed, traffic at Pumpwell circle has been affected. Many people, who observe that only two or three persons are seen working on the flyover, have expressed suspicion that the work will take too long to complete. The flyover at Thokkottu across national 66 is also going on very slowly since several years.

The works of NHAI looks that they are still in 1980s. The MPs and minsters, they don't have actual control on the contractors or the people working under them. The people involved in the project either do not have the required skills and technology or they are lethargic to do anything good for the people. May be it has do with accountability and auditing on the quality and safety of the works done. If something wrong, the highest punishment these people get are merely transfer. No facing of charges or punishment through jail terms. The tax money of the people is taken for a ride and they are all well paid as per the norms, but the outcomes are very poor. Smart city and smart projects are waste when the quality of works are poor. India is still long way to match to any of a small international city around the world.

All flyovers constructed in mangalore by the NHAI have contibuted vey little for reducing congestion. See the Surathkal and kottara flyovers and you will realise that they add to the problem. Bad planning and solutions based on public pressure are the reasons. Flyovers at every junction will only add to the chaos.
A lot of money and time would have been saved and is still possible if people understand that a bypass road is very very essential for mangalore. The outgoing DC jagadeesh had also stated that construction of ring road would be beneficial to mangalore. So our elected reps should be convinced that the growth of mangalore will be possible when we have a very broad highway and that broad highway is possible only on the outskirts of mangalore.

you can keep complaining now saying it is NHAI and central government..local MP etc.. Fact remains that this work was awarded to most corrupt Navyug constructions owned by YSR reddy.. who went to jail and now accounts are frozen. This company does not have money and not able to do the work. work once awarded and half way into this is not easy to cancel and gave it to somebody else. When this work was awarded which corrupt government was in power does not require much intelligenece to guess... MP Nalin could have done better... but core problem has to be understood...

Its high time fekus stop blaming the Congress after 3 years of misrule. the NHAI is controlled by the central government and this authority is in charge of these flyovers. Please ask your Central Minister and your MP who has eaten the money, and why these delays are happening.

This work began in 2012 . If they wouild have given this to Dubai Govt they would complete 25 bridges like this. and the Height of this Bridge not looks like 5.5 meter as per standard measures. Going to be a flop show.
