Modi defends GST, says it will benefit middle-class, poor

New Delhi, Oct 26 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday launched a stout defence of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime, saying it would lead to the moderation of prices and directly benefit the poor.

Inaugurating the International Conference on Consumer Protection for East, South and South-East Asian countries, the prime minister also made a pitch for strong regulatory framework and information sharing to safeguard consumer interest in the backdrop of growing cross-border e-commerce transactions.

At the conference, the prime minister listed out the benefits of GST, implementation of which has become a matter of ridicule with the Opposition terming it "Gabbar Singh Tax".

“After GST, dozens of different types of indirect taxes in the country have been abolished. Many hidden taxes have also gone away. Now, the consumer knows how much tax he has paid to the state government and how much to the central government,” Modi said.

He said GST would usher in a new business culture and benefit consumers. “Increased competition due to GST will lead to moderation in prices. It will directly benefit poor and middle-class consumers,” the prime minister said.

The Congress-led Opposition has launched a shrill campaign against the “faulty” implementation of GST, claiming it was one of the key reasons for the slowdown in the economy.

Modi also highlighted that Asian countries have a 400 crore consumer base with increasing purchasing power and a young demographic profile, which is a huge support for businesses.

“E-commerce and trans-border mobility of people is resulting in increased cross-border transactions. Under these circumstances, a strong regulatory system in every country and information sharing is a must for sustaining consumer confidence,” the prime minister said.

Modi said a framework for cooperation was also necessary to expeditiously act in cases related to consumers from other countries. “This will enhance mutual trust and trade,” the prime minister said.

Neither Demonetisation nor GST did not affect me or to my big family.
But who are complaining needs to study them, their business dealings.
If you are sincere, faithful & trustworthy, there is nothing to worry either with Demonetisation or GST.
When Government specifies a rate for anything ( e. g. Land or flat) but if it can be sold at double the rate (half by cash), it's nothing but cheating, looting.
If this is the case, then why the hell government has to specify the rates?

Who is weeping? Those who looted the country's wealth from past 70 years are weeping day & night. They used to live lavish life by not doing anything except loot. They looted the wealth from all the means & kept it for the future generations, so they are a very dissapointed lot in the country.
Middle class & poor don't have any problems because they don't have corrupt looted money at all.
Modi did the right job & BJP can only & will rule this country.
Corrupts have no place in this country since 2014.

I was wondering why are so many people against our *Honourable PM Narendra Modi*. I noticed that this started after *Demonetization* & GST and keeping that in mind, I was thinking who could be the *people who will be affected by Demonetization*.
I was shocked to discover that here are following categories of people who will feel the impact more than anyone -

*1. Educational Institutions* - They used to get all Capitation fee in cash and most of it unaccounted.

*2. Terrorist Organisation* - Their Funding is under stress

*3. Fake Currency Dealers* - With stress on Digital Economy, they are under Major Stress

*4. Real Estate Mafia* - We all know that a Big Part of payment had to be made in Cash and now they find it difficult to account for unaccounted cash. Benami land transactions are hit.

*5. Hawala Dealers* - With almost all the money in account and a close watch on withdrawals, *they won't mind killing Modi*

*6. Fake Trusts and Charities* - They have been used for Money laundering and with the stopping of large donations by cash, they are unable to fulfill their primary agenda

*7. Politicians* - Less said, better it is. Just look at almost NIL SCAM in last 3+ years is a Proof that many politicians including BJP members themselves are unhappy with Modi. They expected Modi to be like earlier PMs who let ppl swindle.

*8. Rich Agriculture Land Owners* - With most of the subsidy connected to Bank accounts, they are getting exposed.

*9. Film industry* - It's a well known fact that it uses a lot of Black Money, underworld cash and except for Genuine Film makers, others are suffering.
*10. Sports & Other kind of Betting* - We know that gambling (Except Lottery) is banned and still there was a *turnover of USD 150 Billion*.

Please understand that *these industries employ some of the Most Brilliant minds* in the country and they will leave no stone unturned to make sure that Modi does not get a second term with false & hysterical propaganda

Is he intoxicated while making such speeches? Has he lost sense of reality? A properly implemented GST would have been good for everybody, but this GST is kichidi GST which is senseless with so many slabs, so many items double taxed. A bicycle is charged and before it is assembled its pedals, its tyres, its chain are all other parts are also individually charged. Cash cows like petrol, entertainment etc are left out for the states to pounce on people additionally and suck their blood as they deem fit. What Rahul Gandhi is saying is true. This is really Gabbar Singh Tax and a curse on the people.

GST is a brilliant idea by MMS but there was a reason why it wasnt introduced.
The idea was good but he(MMS) knew it wasnt the right time.

Your "Iamchaiwala" unfortunately took this brilliant plan at the wrong time when our economy was not yet completely out of the demonisation aftermaths.
Had chaiwala took the decision after 2020(Assuming he is still the PM after 2019 election) it would be a good idea. Moreover no matter when he took the decision chaiwala should have got complete details from the Former Honourable Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Afterall, its the creator who knows everything and not the one who copies.
This is probably why GST is a failure.
Yes, the "Imaginary economic statistical figure" looks nice but end of the day, its the common people you must look at before taking such huge decisions.
More than "Is India ready" he should asked himself " Are Indians ready" but most importantly he should have asked " Are my common "mitron" ready for this? Can they afford a billing machine/accountant? " which he unfortunately didnt.

I would go on about demonetisation too but I am tired of telling people who are ignorant and think short term.

Our eminent economists did say "The long term cost outweighs the short term benefits"
