PM destroyed country’s economy with demonetisation, GST: Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi, Oct 30 (PTI): Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi on Monday, attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying he had destroyed the country's economy with two "torpedoes" -- note ban and GST.

Narendra Modi had failed to understand the pain of the people, Gandhi said.

Wondering why the government was "celebrating" the first anniversary of note ban on November 8, Gandhi said, "I don't know what is there to celebrate."

Gandhi said while the economy was able to withstand the "torpedo" of note ban, it could not withstand the one of GST.

The economy, he said, "was in tatters now".

"The prime minister is not able to understand the feeling of the people and the hurt and sadness these two decisions have caused," he said after holding two meetings of top Congress leaders on demonetisation and GST.

The Congress leader said the GST is a "good idea" which has been "destroyed" by the Modi government.

While the first meeting discussed the plans of the party, along with other opposition parties, to observe November 8 as 'black day', the second deliberated upon GST implementation. The second meet was attended by former prime minister Manmohan Singh and ex-finance minister P Chidambaram.

Brother good that you woke up

One thing whether it’s Hindu Muslim or Christian if a political party starts to create hatred in the people, it’s very simple they will continue to do so forever
The development will be far from distant

Same things happened before 1991 before Dr. PV Narasimha Rao came to power PVN made a team which had Dr.MMS without any political background to be FM

Today so called developing country tag is because of the excellent policies of that time

In 2019 we require a team to build up the economy

Honestly, demonetisation and GST both would have been very good and purpose would have been achieved, provided proper home work was made before implementation!
It's a well versed economist job ! Not easy as giving speeches!
    1. All of sudden, one can not change rule of the game.
    2. Till yesterday, economical activities were carried out with cash and through Bank.
    3. Overnight Govt can't stop cash transactions, without making alternative mode of transactions in its place. Govt should have made banking, e-payments, card payments, swiping machines mandatory before demonetization.
    4. So ill conceived, Even Govt bodies like Railways, Post offices, RTO offices, had no such provisions and arrangements!
    5. Same is the case with GST. To a graduate, one can not demand that within in 3 months, he should pass out CA examination. Student require adequate time and training! It's like demanding that in 3 months time, all communications must be in English to a vernacular medium person.
CST compliance are so complicated, people used to old compliance, were demanded sophisticated GST compliance within such a short time. Compliance should have been increased gradually in a phased manner, like IFRS was implemented.
    6. Moreover, Govt own IT infrastructure, electricity, man power was not made available, how could so vast compliance can be accommodated?
    7. Govt should have made GST return filing, once in a year, half yearly, quarterly, bi-monthly and monthly according to turnover.
    8. Moreover, state filing should have been within one return from Head office, with statewise sheet. Payment also should have been in one challan with statewise code!
    9. Frankly though the vision is good, it's all messed out.
    10. Let's see how our intelligent people will respond.

You have very well elaborated how the the demonetisation and GST could have been implemented. Yes, black money is a curse, but it cannot be eradicated just by haphazardly implementing the law. Even now the government can out of the mess with proper planning. Till yesterday, economical activities were carried out with cash and through Bank, which cannot be changed overnight to digitisation without proper infrastructure.
    God save us

Rahul Gandhi has rightly pointed out and understands comman man's pain well. Whereas BJP doesn't even have slightest clue where the economy is heading, can not even see distressed people and understand thier pain. In BJP campaign there is no word about GDP, jobs, developmental plans. BJP has only cows, singing national anthem, protests, beef catchers and moral policing which doesn't contribute in anyway to improve GDP.
