Jeweller planted 'hijack' threat on Jet Airways to bring girlfriend back: Cops

Ahmedabad, Oct 31 (PTI): Jeweller Birju Kishore Salla, who allegedly planted a note about hijackers and a bomb in the toilet of a Mumbai-Delhi Jet Airways flight, was arrested on Tuesday under the stringent Anti-Hijacking Act, a senior official said.

This is the first arrest under the Act which came into force in July 2017, replacing the 1982 vintage law, according to which an accused can face a maximum punishment of life imprisonment till death and his properties can be confiscated, police said.

"We have arrested him under the Anti-Hijacking Act sections. This is the first arrest under the Act after it came into force," Joint Commissioner of Police (crime) J K Bhatt said.

"We are in contact with the National Investigation Agency. The case may be handed over to the NIA if the Centre wants," he said.

"Salla is a multi-millionaire jeweller, having a flat in a posh locality of Mumbai. He is originally from Dedan village of Amreli district," the police official said.

"The accused had planted the note with an intention to close down Jet Airways so that his girlfriend working in the Delhi-based office of the airline would leave her job and come to stay with him in Mumbai," Bhatt said.

He said the accused had earlier complained of finding a cockroach in the food served on Jet Airways flight.

"We are investigating if he is in contact with any other anti-social groups. We have not found any other offence against him," Bhatt said.

The Mumbai-Delhi Jet Airways flight, with 115 passengers and seven crew members on board, had on Monday made an emergency landing after a note stating that there were hijackers and a bomb on board was found in the plane's washroom.

The Boeing 737-900 plane was parked at a remote bay and all 122 people on board safely deplaned.

The note, allegedly placed by Salla, stated that there were hijackers and a bomb in the cargo area, officials had earlier said.

Mr. Bhatt's explanation saying that Salla placed a note of having bomb in on Airlines, so that his girl friend would quit her job and stay with him is very silly. Either Salla is not in his sound mind or Mr. Bhatt is protecting him. Every passengers effected by Salla's actions, should sue him for a monetary damages since he is a filthy rich.

Ahmedabad Police have detained Birju Kishore Salla, the man behind the Jet Airways scare on Monday. Birju is a Mumbai-based Gujarati jeweller.
The Urdu translation of the note in English was appalling and made no sense except it being an attempt to make it look like it was written by a Muslim. The letter also ended with ‘Allah is great.’
The use Google Translate to have the English note appear in Urdu too so that the hijack threat appeared to have been from a Muslim organisation.
Salla, who now lives in Mumbai, had played a similar prank on the airline in the past out of a grudge he held, the police official said. This is the second time when Salla did such a mischief with Jet Airways. A few months ago, he tried to harass the airline using some other trick.
Joint Commissioner of Police (crime) J K Bhatt from Gujarat police is nothing but deflecting to shield the jeweller who is one of the main contributor for the BJP party fund in the past.
JK Bhatt himself was facing charges of extortion, illegal detention, kidnapping and criminal conspiracy given reprieve recently by Gujarat high court.
If Salla is a multi-millionaire jeweller, having a flat in a posh locality of Mumbai, he doesn't need his girlfriend to work. He can also ask her to take transfer to Mumbai from Delhi or she can seek employment in some other airlines were many International flights are operating.
The Gujarat police version is highly doubtable.
