Daijiworld Media Network – Puttur (EP)

Puttur, Nov 1: A man who gained access to documents pertaining to a girl who was terminally sick, tried to take advantage of the situation by seeking donations from people for treating the girl. It transpires that the man in question had come to know about the financial crisis faced by the family of the girl for treating her, considering that her treatment costs worked out to eight lac rupees. The girl had breathed her last after an appeal seeking help from people was published in the media.

The man who was the target of attack, it transpires, after reading in newspapers about the plight of the family, had visited the house of the girl after coming to know that she had died. It is said that he put together certain documents relating to the girl's medical condition and began to present them to people and seek financial help from them for treating the girl. The man had succeeded in deceiving some people in this manner, but some people in Kalladka, who already had the knowledge that the girl for the treatment whom the man was seeking funds, had passed away, manhandled the man for hoodwinking the people and let him go after issuing a stern warning. The incident happened on Tuesday October 31, and the person who was collecting money in the name of the girl who was not alive, happened to be Muzammil Ahmed.

A woman had approached Press Club here, as she did not find a way to pool eight lac rupees for the treatment of the girl. A journalist, Shamsuddin, had obtained details from her and published a report about her problems in the media. Three days after the news was published, the girl succumbed to her sickness.Muzammil, who came to know about the death of the girl, visited her home, gathered medical records pertaining to her, and used them as a means to deceive kind-hearted people. However, the deceptive designs of the man came into the open after some people called the telephone number mentioned in the news report to get more information and realized that they were being taken for a ride by the man.

    Charity is big business.

Muzammil Ahmed's actions are relatively minor when compared to many charities in the coastal districts.

Although some are genuine, several charities collect money, but the trust members of the charity are all family members of the main person.

Is it not amazing that so many charities thrive in the coastal districts without publishing their annual reports, and the names of the trust members?

I was personally directed by a lady to put a significant donation to her personal bank account and not to the account of the orphanage - for which I had organised the payment!

My sincere request to the public:
Do not hand over a single paisa to a charity unless the charity publishes the annual accounts, and the names/relationship of the trust members.

True. Almost every charity is out there to hood wink people. It’s better to only donate to those charities who are 100% transparent in their reports and expenses and income.
