Ramanath Rai recollects people who enriched Kannada language

Mangaluru, Nov 1: Dakshina Kannada district in-charge minister, B Ramanath Rai, who hoisted the flag and inspected guard of honour at the Kannada Rajyotsava programme organized at Nehru Maidan here on Wednesday November 1 by the district administration, recollected about rich contributions made to Kannada language by generations of writers, activists, poets etc.

He said that as per documents available, Kannada language has a impressive history spanning over 1,500 years. Rai said that on account of Karnataka unification movement launched by Alur Venkat Rao in 1905, Kannadigas came together.

"After India became a republic in 1950, various provinces of India were regrouped into states on the basis of language. Mysore state was formed on November 1, 1956, by bringing together areas where Kannada was predominantly used. The then chief minister, D Devaraj Urs, was instrumental in renaming the state as Karnataka on November 1, 1973," he explained.

Rai paid rich tributes to lineages of kings as well as poets, writers and Kannada activists for contributing to the progress of the language and the state. He made a special mention of poets from this region like Panje Mangesh Rao, Manjeshwar Govinda Pai and Dr Shivaram Karanth and paid them rich tributes. He mentioned about the fact that Fr Ferdinand Kittel from here was the first ever person to edit Kannada-English dictionary and that first ever publication from Kannada, 'Mangaluru Samachara' was also published from here.

Rai said that it is important at this juncture, when fast technological changes and social changes like globalization, liberalization, and privatization are taking place, not to forget one's duty to conserve Kannada by taking measures like making its use mandatory in administration, popularizing Kannada software, compulsory Kannada teaching right from primary schools etc. He said that the government has undertaken many measures for the welfare of the language and also the people of Karnataka. Rai also listed out various works sanctioned to the district and efforts being made to augment water supply and develop parks in urban areas and sanction of funds under 'Bidai' scheme by department of minorities welfare towards the marriages of poor girls. He called upon students and young people in particular to protect and give further fillip to Kannada language and land and also for uphold cultural richness of Karnataka.

Ramanath Rai presented district level Kannada Rajyotsava awards on this occasion to 15 achievers drawn from various fields.

An impressive march past with the participation of different wings of district police, home guards, NCC, army and air force units, Seva Dal boys and girls, and NSS was held on this occasion. Before the start of the function, a procession was taken out from Ambedkar Circle in the city to Nehru Maidan, the venue of the district level Rajyotsava programme.

Chief whip of the state legislative council, Ivan D'Souza, MP, Nalin Kumar Kateel, deputy commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district, Sasikumar Senthil, city mayor, Kavita Sanil, deputy mayor, Rajneesh, Dakshina Kannada zilla panchayat president, Meenakshi Shanthigodu, and several other dignitaries were present.

Rajyotsava observed in Udupi, Madhwaraj stresses on tourism development

Udupi, Nov 1: At the Kannada Rajyotsava district level programme held at Udupi, district in-charge minister, Pramod Madhwaraj, inspected guard of honour and handed over awards to 52 achievers. He also gave details of various measures and schemes undertaken to develop the district including development of roads, works undertaken under employment guarantee scheme, and achievement under Swachh Bharat Abhiyan in which the district has bagged 'Swachhata Darpan' award. He also spoke about 100 percent achievement of the district in building family toilets, construction of houses under Pradhan Mantri Grameena Awas scheme, Basava Vasati scheme, and Dr B R Ambedkar housing scheme and market based organic farming, as well as giving impetus to cultivation of 'Siridhanya' grains aimed at better health.

The minister made special mention about tourism development achieved in the district in the recent past and efforts made to exploit tourism potential of the district, saying that a scheme of village stay has been introduced in Moodakudru village within Kallianpur panchayat for introducing the local culture and food system to the tourists.

The minister thanked people's representatives of the district for extending wholehearted cooperation in achieving integrated development of the district. He called upon people to keep in mind the need to conserve cultural integration, harmonious co-existence, love for one's state and country and to set aside their time for the progress of one's state and country.

Kundapur, Nov 1: Assistant commissioner here, Shilpa Nag, who inaugurated the Kannada Rajyosava programme organized at Gandhi Maidan here by the taluk administration on Wednesday, termed November 1 as the day on which the dream of bringing Kannadigas together was realized and it also it happens to be the day that evokes emotional feelings as Mysore state was renamed as Karnataka on this day. In her Rajyotsava message, Shilpa recollected the contributions and sacriices made by stalwarts who served Kannada language and literture in various ways. She said that places like Belur and Halebeedu depict rich cultural heritage of Kannadigas. She urged people to let go of the craze for English and take up responsibility of saving and enriching Kannada.

The programme was presided over by taluk panchayat president, Jayashree Sudhakar Mogaveera. Municipal president, Vasanti Mohan Saranga, vice president, Rajesh Kavari, town palanning authority chairman, Vikas Hegde, deputy superintendent of police, Praveen H Nayak, in-charge executive officer of taluk panchayat, Dr Nagabhushan Udupi, municipal chief officer, Gopalakrishna Shetty, tahsildar, G M Borkar, block education officer, Ashok Kamath etc were present. An attractive march past led by the local station house officer, Harish R, was taken out on this occasion. Cultural programmes were presented by students of different schools.
