Anti-Kannada graffiti scrawled on walls in Kasargod college, students protest

Kasargod, Nov 2: Even as Karnataka was celebrating Kannada Rajyotsava on Wednesday November 1, anti-Kannada activists, in a deplorable act, scrawled slogans against Kannada in a college here. The incident once again brought to light the tension over language prevailing on the Karnataka-Kerala border.

When the students, teachers and other staff arrived at college on Wednesday morning, they found anti-Kannada graffiti on the walls and doors of the college, especially near the Kannada department.

'Banish Kannada from here, this is Malayalam region', 'November 1 is Kerala Paravi, not Kannada Rajyotsava', 'Kerala always number 1, always ahead', 'Malayalam is our mother tongue', 'We are Mallus, Malayalam is God's own language' were some of the graffiti writings in Malayalam found on the walls.

Offended by the act, Kannada student organization 'Sneha Ranga' staged a flash protest outside the principal's office. Even as the protest was going on, some Malayali students approached the protestors and a war of words ensued, which soon threatened to snowball into a brawl.

Vidyanagar police on receiving information rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.

The Kannada speakers who form the linguistic minority in border areas like Kasargod have for long been facing injustice and undue pressure, as they neither belong to Karnataka nor are they assimilated into Kerala.

On Wednesday morning, the students were shocked to see anti-Kannada writings scribbled on the walls near the Kannada department. The Kannada students who said they were repeatedly being insulted by their Malayali counterparts decided to protest, led by 'Sneha Ranga' Kannada literary and cultural group. They protestors also held a rally within the campus.

The Kannada students called for an end to the discrimination allegedly meted out to them by Malayalis in the college. "It is distressing that while Kerala and Karnataka both celebrate formation day on the same date (November 1), Malayali students are insulting us in the college," they said.

It is alleged that despite the protest and the seriousness of the matter, college principal Dr Aravind Krishnan did not take any immediate action. Later in the afternoon, he inspected the writings in the presence of the police. He had participated in the Kerala formation day celebrations in the morning, after which he remained in his chamber till afternoon, even as the protest was going on outside his office, it is said.

Moreover, the principal allegedly rejected the Kannada students' appeal, written in Kannada, seeking permission to hold a formal protest in the college. The police who looked at the appeal told the students that they do not known Kannada, and asked them to write it in English or Malayalam. The students then wrote the appeal in English. However, the principal rejected the English version too, it is alleged.

When the students refused to leave even till around 1 pm, the officials of the college told them to vacate the premises. The students were reportedly taken to task as their protest had already been reported in the local media by then.

It is learnt that as soon as the Kannada students began their protest, the principal informed the Vidyanagar police and asked them to provide security to the college. The police allegedly told the students to stop shouting slogans or face arrest. The students, however, did not budge and kept up their demands.

The police assured the protestors that the culprits behind the graffiti would be arrested within 20 days. The students warned that if the police fail to do so, they would hold intense protests.

'Sneha Ranga' president Balakrishna Belinje, secretary Sushmitha Shetty, editor of 'Kannada Dhwani' Sujith Kumar Chavar and members of 'Sneha Ranga' participated in the protest.

All the Malayalees are here or settling in Blore or Mangalore. Studies, medicine, nursing, housing, business you name it , they are in it .For the simple reason, they cannot have it in Kerala, Thanks to the communist and other regimes ruling them. And this is how they show their gratitude.

Funny to read all these abusive comments against Malayalies but no one is interested to know the ground realities here! It was kannadigas who started the whole issue after they declared Nov 1 as black day. They disrupted the classes to which Malayali students reacted. It is Kannada organizations of Kasaragod who are spoiling the future of Kannada students here, injecting "Lingustic chauvinism" in their young minds and distorting facts. The Malayalam written on the walls are not proper and BA malayalam students wont make such silly mistakes. For example, Kannada is written as Kannannada and Malayalam "la" is written like kannada "la" with a curve. Proves this are doings of some Kannada students who wanted to delibrately create issues to garner media attention and act like victims.

And what rights do Kannadigas have in protesting for Kannada in Kerala? We are witnessing extreme language fundamentalism in Karnataka. Other language boards are blackened, other state people threatened, Only Kannada attitude. Linguistic minoroties are treated like vermin in Karnataka. Best example is Belgaum. And still, why Kannadigas are crying foul in Kerala?

Not to mention, Kerala is providing upto PG level Kannada education in Kasaragod. What more these people require?

Some guy here commented that Keralites are dependant on Karnataka...kick out keralites etc. Dude, We are not getting your services for free..we are paying...Your Mangalore economy is heavily dependant on us. Most of your colleges and hospitals lure us to Mangalore by advertising in Malayalam news paper. They are clever. They know the importance of Malayalam. They know our value. This is a mutually benefiting business.

Catch hold of all the mallus and dump them back in their God own country and also pull down all the hoardings in Malayalam. Let us be free of these people who are creating problems on all our border areas. We will definitely find plenty of these people.

    Dear Nowfal,

Why are you bringing party/organisation here? This incident has happened in a border district which we both belong to. Both Malayalam & Kannada languages are spoken here. For some it is their mother tongue and for some it isn't. But insulting another language is not good anyway.

What about Kannadigas insulting Malayalam and Malayalies the whole time in Kasaragod? We Malayalies popularized Kasaragod as "Saptha Bhasha Sangama Bhoomi" whereas for Kannadigas, Kasaragod is just "Kannada Nadu". Proves which community is more tolerant! And yes, most of the Kannada students have RSS background and they learnt this divisive techniques from RSS only...Play the victim card!

Malayalies did not popularized Kasaragod as "Saptha Bhasha Sangama Bhoomi". it got the name naturally as there are people from Thulu, Kannada, Konkani, Beari , malayalam, etc.. Majority is Kannada. Kasaragod is Kannada Nadu. From Thalappadi to Kanhangad there are kannada and malayalam both medium schools are there. Most of Kannadigas know more than 2 languages here, but malayalee knows only malayalam. it is the malayalees pressurising others to speak in malayalam.

Mr.Ganesh! You are absolutely wrong! It is Malayalies who popularised the usage - "Sapthabhasha Sangama Bhoomi" . For Kannadigas its just Kannada nadu. I have seen many Kannada activists here who are not happy with "Sapthabhasha sanghama bhoomi" tag , they are even against it. As per Prabhalaran commission report, Kasaragod district has only 4% Kannada population and another 10% Tulu population. Almost 2% Konkani population and another 3% tribal n other languages...rest are Malayalies...thats right nearly 83% are malayalies. So Kasaragod is a Malayali dominated district with only Manjeshwaram Taluk being Tulu majority. Please refer the report if you have any doubts! And you kniw what, because of pressure from Kannada lobby, malayalies in manjeshwaram taluk are forced to study Kannada! So pls know whos forcing on whom..!

Are we not Indians first? These stupids who scrawled on the walls do not know that they come to different parts of Karnataka to study, to do business, to earn their lively hood. God's own country made possible because of the generosity of the people of karnataka and other parts of India and gulf money.

People in Mangalore are not even bothered about the Malayalam boards in Hospitals and Hotels (which of course are money making ideas).
If such behaviour continues in Kasaragod, then Mangalore people should pull out all such Malayalam boards.
