Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Nov 5: Young scientist of Indian Institute of Science Bengaluru, and ornithologist, Harish Bhat (46), from Udyavar near here, breathed his last all of a sudden late night on Friday. He was on a visit to the district to provide guidance to Dakshina Kannada and Udupi district level science exhibition and competition being held at Alva's, Moodbidri.

Bhat was the son of Innanje Undaru Ramakrishna Bhat and Sumathi R Bhat couple who had settled in Udyavar near here. He had studied at Christian High school, Board high school and MGM college here. He is survived by wife and a child.

On Friday, after holding consultation with lecturers, Bhat had discussed all the issues with chairman of Alva's Foundation, Dr M Mohan Alva, and had lunch with him.

When he came back to the venue of the exhibition sometime later, at around 2.45 pm, he collapsed to the ground. Immediately he was admitted into a local hospital. However, as his condition was precarious, he was rushed to a private hospital at Mangaluru. The doctors said that Bhat died of acute brain haemorrhage.

Bhat had disclosed about the nagging headache he had been suffering from since sometime, to his family members four days back, and had been prescribed medicines by a local physician. He also had talked about his headache to another scientist who accompanied him, identified as Narayana Aiyar.

Bhat had tremendous interest about environment, bio diversity, plants, trees etc. He was associated with Adamya Chaitanya and Vagdevi organizations, Bengaluru. He was involved with research and scientific studies.

Dr Harish Bhat was a really great & unique personality. Have worked with him on various trainings related to Biodiversity awareness and his speeches were very simple and understandable by the rural folk and especially by the metro dwellers, for whom awareness is very essential. He had a wonderful talent of relating anecdotes to nature and impressing upon people to safeguard and conserve the natural ecology and forests. He also had mastery over explaining science in Kannada and using proverbs which made his speeches unique. His passing away has cost the conservation biology a great loss.

Indeed a great loss. RIP sir. Most of the general practitioners in India do not spend enough time with the patient to understand clearly what the sickness is. A persistent head ache since last few days, location of the pain, other symptoms, should have prompted the physician to refer to a specialist immediately or refer to a CT/MRI at a nearby hospital.

I truly agree with this comment. RIP to young scientist. what a loss to our society. Sad that he could have saved if diagnosed well in advance. What can be done? all these facilities available only for politicians, looters and black money holders. If any of these category people had a headache, dr would have prescribed all possible tests and kept them for a year also in hospital for free.. but sad for the people who really work for the nation and environment hardly get such facility at least to diagnose and give right treatment.

May his soul rest in peace. May the Almighty give strength to his dear ones to bear this young man's loss of life. Pressure of work must have prevented him from consulting a doctor in time. I guess, IISc should provide more medical facilities to its staff, particularly, Scientists and Researchers.

Precious life lost R.I.P. the symptom looks like Sub Dural Hepitoma. I had this problem in 2012 where in I started getting acute head ache for no reason. From oct 25 to 23rd December I suffered and went to many doctors who just gave me simple medicines. On 23rd December when i drowned to comatose I was taken to Chennai Appolo multispeciality hospital (lucky I was in Chennai) and I went through Burhole surgery and draaiming of fluid. The problem is rampant now and the high speed cars are main culprits .. when we jam the break at high speed there is tentendcy for our BP to shoot up and minor nevers in the sub dural puncture and bleed. Any head ache after a whip lash injury , sudden anxiety or even a sudden jerk it is better to go to super specialty hospital and keep monitoring oneself closely. Doctors will not be able to find out unless the CT shows or they find trace of blood through the brain fluid taken out of lumbar puncture. I am sharing this because , after my operation I have found many many cases of sudden death due to this problem. Brain haemorrhage I will not know if one can survive but, Sub Dural Hapetoma one can survive if fond out. The surgery is also quite simple and one can be out of hospital within a week.

After that my wife took me to doctor in Mangaluru and he said that I have meningitis, immediate hospitalisation and treatment. Recovered in 1 weeks time. Otherwise definitely died next day.
