Mangaluru, Nov 7: Heavy rains coupled with thunder and lightning lashed throughout Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts on the evening of Monday, November 6. This is first heavy rain after the entry of post-monsoon in the state.

Sundara (47), resident of Kukkady in Arayapu village, died when lightning struck him inside his house.

Roof of the house of Girija Mogaveerti, resident of Koravadi under Kumbashi village limits flew off due the high paced wind and the wooden support of the roof also have fallen down. The total loss is estimated at around Rs 1 lac. Girija's husband is bed-ridden and the family is completely shattered due to this disaster induced by natural calamity. Raghavendra, member of gram panchayat and officials of the panchayat visited the spot and assessing the loss.

Mescom incurred huge loss as many of the electrical poles got uprooted as the trees fell on them due to the high speed winds. Electricity poles got uprooted at Kalleri-Guruvayanakere state highway, Hirebandadi and Kalleri-Beltangady state highway. Vehicles coming to Uppinangady are being diverted via Madanthyar for the same reason.

Torrential rain lashed Beltangady, Puttur, Kokkada, Nelyadi, Patrame, Shishila, Shiradi, Bantwal, Vittal of Dakshina Kannada district, certain places of Kundapur in Udupi district and in the district of Kasaragod also.

Electricity supply got disrupted in most of the areas. Mangaluru had cloudy atmosphere around evening and experienced breeze and downpour at around 7 30 pm. Uppinangady in Puttur had the highest rainfall of 80 mm. Badagakajekar of Bantwal taluk had 58.5 mm, Tannirupantha of Beltangady taluk had 51.5 mm, while Balkunje in Mangaluru taluk received 15.5 mm and Devachala in Sullia had 37 mm or rain.
