Bengaluru: GST badly designed by officials, says Mohandas Pai

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Nov 12: Former Infosys CFO T V Mohandas Pai took on 'babus' for complicating the Goods and Service Tax (GST).

On Sunday, Pai not blaming the government, took to twitter to opine, 'The GST is badly designed by officials'.

"Facts are Facts. People blame IT system forgetting that the tax design is by officials and very closely complex," Pai tweeted.

Pai's tweet was in response to a tweet and article shared by veteran journalist Rajdeep Sardesai, which stressed that government should have given more space for experts

After Pai’s tweet, Rajdeep tweeted back that he was 'glad to see an agreement'.

In September, Pai had shared optimism with finance minister Arun Jaitley’s remarks that the economy would grow at 7%, despite lower GDP growth in Q1, due to pre-GST destocking of goods.

Pai had said India’s growth in future would benefit from creation of one single tax, reduced supply chain costs, increased competition and low inflation and one single national market for the first time.

In India, if you keep waiting to bring out a perfect product, more issues keep coming and there won't be any progress. Same holds true with GST legislation. Sure, since it is the first time implementation, there is bound to be issues in a large and diverse country like India. As long as the government is open minded to make corrections, it is going to to get only better. May be Mr. Pai's Infosys should have designed the software modules for GST better to be flexible enough to incorporate changes quickly. Mr. Pai can certainly write to GST council and provide his suggestions for changes instead of just complaining.

Yes, true. It is badly designed. GST was the brainchild of MMS. Those days who opposed, have now opted and implemented. But the tragedy is that it went on to the wrong hands. This BJP looted the public in the name of GST. Okay now they have relaxed some items to keep elections in mind. But what about demonetized currency? How they will rectify?

Sheikh, Karkala, Check your facts before you comment. GST is brain child of AB Vajpayee who setup empowered committee of state finance ministers in 2000 and shaping credit goes to UPA. It was not only BJP opposed GST then even congress ruled state too opposed it. GST is a tax which subsumes many state and central taxes. In effect, it reduces the power of states to tax their citizens. Hence it was essential that all the states and the center were on the same page at every of the GST Act. This did not happen during UPS rule. The states were concerned that their finances would go haywire as they would lose a big pie of their revenues.

Now when Chidambaram moved the bill with the target of rolling out by 2000 states had concerns and demand. Majority of states opposed including states run by UPA such as Maharashtra and Kerala and many more as TN, WB,etc. They had following demand keeping petroleum alcohol entry tax compensation of revenue out of GST ambit. Erstwhile UPA govt was unable to reach a common ground with the states even though UPA was in power for 10 yrs.

Economy of such a big nation shouldn't be given to manage to the one who use trial and error method.
Will a industrialist give power to the one uses trial and error method or trusted leader?
It's we the people who have given the baton to the leaders to lead over us, are to be judged whether wise or foolish for the choices they have made and making hence forth!

Atlast, Pai tweeted against his leaders!
Pai is a well known business man, selling beef(beef burger at his son' hotel) and asking to ban on beef!. First time ever talked against saffron party or GST. GST is not only faulty designed, hurry on implementing, Poorly researched.
In my opinion at least 2 more years to be (would have been) wait before launching GST, it is launched in hurry. Should have been consulted Manmohan Singh like professional without any hesitation if they cant find one.

Need to wait one more year.
Need to see real numbers. Profit and loss for government.
Real loss for check posts and under the table transactions.
Now taxman should run some random inspections so that gst is really paid by producers and no fake bills...

Yes, BJP raised abandoned child GST of congress. But BJP is an arrogant parent and they pampered and spoilt their child,as they wanted their child to be the best.
When congress warned about disciplining the child,BJP ignored and the nation suffered.
Now BJP has realised its mistake and given many tight slaps to the child by cutting percentage of feeding the monster.

If the GST implementation were a success, Mr Pai would have happily praised Mr Modi and Mr Jaitly.

But it is a dismal failure!

So, the failure needs to be attributed to some nameless/faceless babus.

Regardless of Mr Pai's choice in assigning the blame, India could have learnt from the experience of other countries.

Some countries have implemented GST more than 15 years ago. India could have learnt much from their experience.

But then again, one needs sufficient education even to learn from others' experience!

Mr.Mohandas Pai who is the investor in 'Public TV' has relentlessly campaigned for PM Modi's government in his TV Channel. Relatively all TV debates he is been open supporter of BJP's policies in the center.
All ready 'paradise paper' has leaked one of the name from Manipal group. Is this causing Mr.Pai to talk about GST to save his comrade from offshore 'black money'?
Mr.Pai, BJP has taken GST lightly as 'GS-TEA' [Gur(Jaggery is a traditional non-centrifugal cane sugar) Sweetened Tea)
Mr.Pai are you in favour of GST for 'capitation fees' for medical and Engineering seats which is unaccounted to billions?
Please spare some time and Tweet us back 'yes I am in favour of GST for capitation fees'.
Sir, Will you do it for the sake of nation and millions of capable students who can't afford higher education?

If, as per Pai saying that GST is badly designed, then why didn't he share his ideas as an independent guy with no political interest, to the Modi government as an advisor, if he is good in it at the right time. Seems he is fit in degrading the government schemes & he is eager to get fake publicity, as he doesn't know what to do when BJP is there in power.

Seems like he has been directed by Khangress led Left parties to issue a statement like this, to give mileage of any political interest. This statement misguides the country men as it has come from the such a big man.
