Bangalore, Jul 25: The case pertaining to the unnatural death of Padmapriya was raked up once again in the legislative council on Thursday July 24, when opposition leader Veeranna Mattikatti requested the speaker for permission to move an adjournment motion on the issue, as it was a case which has kicked up lot of public interest, so that the issue could be discussed threadbare by the members. Although his colleagues in the opposition backed him, the ruling members expressed their strong opposition to this move, giving rise to chaotic situation after the rival members started shouting at each other.
Veeranna Mattikatti argued that a detailed discussion can only clear the air around this case, which is also related with human values. The case has drawn national interest and the government has failed to deal with the case effectively. Unnatural death of Padmapriya has given rise to various doubts among the general public, he argued, in favour of his proposal to move adjournment motion.
Tippanna who is officiating as speaker at present, asked the members not to go into the details of the case but to clearly state under which rule discussion on the issue is permissible. Opposition member Nanaiah, who actively backed Mattikatti, asked the ruling members who were vehemently opposing the discussions, as to whether they were afraid of something fishy and whether they were trying to shield someone. BJP legislator Shivayogi Swami, who raised a point of order, asked whether a case which is in the court, can be raised in the council for discussion. House leader and home minister Dr V S Acharya clarified that the government is ready for discussing the issue but there is no provision to discuss it under the adjournment motion.
The speaker, after a protracted discussion, said that he would give a ruling on the admissibility of the adjournment motion on Friday July 25 morning.
