Mangaluru, Feb 3: Dakshina Kannada district women Congress on Saturday February 3 took out a rally by pulling bullock carts and also riding bicycles, in protest against the central government over the hike in fuel prices, accusing it of following 'anti-people' policy.
The rally was flagged off by was inaugurated by Kannada cine actress Bhavana and MLA J R Lobo. It began from Dr Ambedkar circle and culminated near the DC's office.
Addressing the protestors, J R Lobo said, "Price of petrol and diesel is skyrocketing day by day. BJP carried out a massive protest over the same cause when UPA government was in power at the centre. However, during the UPA regime, the price of one barrel of oil in the international market was $ 140. Today the price has reduced considerably. But the NDA government is constantly increasing the price of fuel.
"The general public is facing inconvenience because of the fuel hike. But the BJP is silent on the issue. This shows the indifferent attitude of the central government towards the people. It has become difficult for the ordinary people in this country to lead a normal life. PM Narendra Modi-led government should immediately take note of the issue and make sure that people do not suffer," Lobo said.
Dakshina Kannada women Congress president Shalet Pinto said, "Fuel price hike has resulted in the increase of prices in food supplies also. Price of gas cylinder is at a record high. If this continues, the day is not far when women will have to close their kitchens and their families will have to starve. We have come to a situation where all our earnings are going into procuring gas cylinders and food. Despite this, the Modi government has chosen not to understand the condition of women and has instead presented a budget that favours the rich corporates. There is no value for women in this country. We are forced to come to the streets to demand our rights."
Some rode bicycles while others pulled bullock carts to registered their protest during the rally.
Mayor Kavita Sanil, ZP member Mamata Gatty and others were present.
