Mangaluru: Young at heart – 96-year-old traffic warden Joe Gonsalves buys car

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Feb 3: Joe Gonsalves (96), very popular senior traffic warden of the city proved that age is not a barrier if one is willing to do anything in life by buying a new Desire car. What is commendable is that Joe is going to drive the car himself.

Hanumantharaya, DCP (law and order), handed over the key of the new car to Joe at Mandovi showroom in city.

Joe Gonsalves made an appeal to the public on this occasion by saying, "Citizens of Mangaluru have to cooperate in order to maintain smooth flow of traffic in the city. Youth have to come forward to serve the community as traffic wardens."

Aroor Sanjay Rao, director of Mandovi motors was present on the occasion.

A well thought call to the Youth of the City... Instead of being a goon with Gow Raksha or Moral Police, such people must change their mindset and convert their negative energy into these kind of social services. Surely God will bless them.....

Quite a few people in the USA drive at that age. But driving in India at that age is quite challenging. One should have a good motor skill. Congratulations Joe.

Mr. Joe Gonsalves, Congratulations not only for the car you have purchased at an age children leave their parents saying they are old. You have certainly opened a new page brightened with the love and the courage,in the book of life. I fully agree with you and I always say. Age is just a number. What one need to know is how one can do something special for self or the family. In other words, have dreams. Never ever think one has retired. Retired from the job and not from the life. Once retired, look for something which will keep one busy. Body is a machine which was very active and if one stops keeping this body machine active, then it will get rusted. That is you will be mentally busy with worries etc.
Mr.Joe Sir, may the Lord bless you with a long life with good health, peace and joy.

Congratulations Sir on your new Car & also heartfelt gratitude to you for the service you render. But I feel a city like Mangalore needs more traffic policemen. Every day our roads are choked during peak hours. Most junctions don't have signals and it's a "free for all" with the bigger vehicles intimidating the others. I've seen elderly and new drivers struggling at such places, especially due to the abusive bus drivers. Looks like the city administration waits for a fatal accident to initiate precautions (like the Nanthoor accident). Can't we be proactive. I feel that a traffic policemen can have more authority as opposed to the traffic warden on the road. Moreover they are trained too in traffic management.
