Udupi: Sea Erosion Washes Away Fisheries Road at Thottam

Udupi, Aug 3: The fisheries road that lies near Tottam, at the limits of Tenka Yermal, near here was totally washed away by the high rise tides of Arabian Sea, on Saturday August 2.
The houses located at Belpadty and Gopibelpadty, traditional fishermen colonies are facing the danger, owing to the 25 meters of fisheries road that links both Tenka and Bada Yermal villages, was washed away by sea tides on Saturday afternoon.
The roaring sea has already uprooted more than 20 palms and others are on the verge of collapse, owing to sea march which poses threat to nearby houses and plantations.
Narayanappa, assistant executive in-charge of fisheries department who had visited the spot on Friday evening, said to media persons, that the emergency works to curb sea erosion will be undertaken on Saturday morning, while the contractor has dumped around 5 loads of boulders at the sea erosion spot so far. Moreover, citing the delay in executing the works when the media persons enquired with Narayanappa, he said that they have shortage of trucks.
The local residents are wary of snail phase of works despite the situation has worsened. They say that the fisheries road could have been restored if the emergency works were carried out two days ago.
Tenka Yermal gram panchayat president Satish Salian, Udupi Tahsildar V B Fernandes, village accountant Basavaraj have visited the location on Saturday evening, in order to submit their report to Deputy Commissioner (DC), urging him to undertake remedial measures at the earliest.
