Udupi, Aug 12: Rickshaw drivers in the city staged a protest against a few personnel of the District Armed Reserve (DAR) police for allegedly assaulting two rickshaw drivers here, on Tuesday August 12 morning.
Sources said that a DAR police contingent that included Shrikar, Chandrakant Kemmannu and another person, assaulted a rickshaw driver named Nityanand on Monday August 11 night. Immediately, another rickshaw driver Mohan Bangera and a few others came to the rescue of Nityanand and the matter was solved later amicably.
But four more DAR police personnel joined their colleagues and assaulted Mohan Bangera, when he was alone. The incident occurred at 11.30 pm, sources revealed.
Mohan Bangera has been admitted to Ajjarkad Hospital for treatment. Nityanand has filed a complaint against the DAR police, at the city police station. The leaders of Rickshaw Owners' and Drivers' Association have submitted a memorandum to the higher authorities, urging them to take action against the erring DAR policemen.
It may be recalled that Shrikar, one of the assailants, was suspended a year ago for illegal supply of hemp by using the police van. Later, he was reinstated in the department.
