Mangaluru, Mar 20: In a bid to underscore the Congress policy of secularism, Indian National Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday March 20 visited Rosario Cathedral, Kudroli temple and later Ullal Dargah during his visit to the district.
Gandhi, who was in the city as part of the party's 'Janaashirvad' road show ahead of the Assembly elections, visited Rosario Cathedral soon after the public meet at Nehru Maidan which saw a huge turnout.
Rahul Gandhi was welcomed at Rosario Cathedral by bishop Dr Aloysius Paul D'Souza.
The Congress president joined the Christian community of Mangaluru to offer prayers in the cathedral.
Chief minister Siddaramaiah, KPCC president G Parameshwara and other state and local leaders accompanied Gandhi.
Bishop Dr Aloysius Paul DSouza, Msgr Denis Moras Prabhu, NRI entrepreneur and philanthropist Ronald Colaco, Sr Rose Celine, M P Noronha, Fr J B Crasta and others felicitated Rahul Gandhi.
Fr Anil Fernandes compered the programme and Roy Castelino proposed the vote of thanks.
Rahul Gandhi then proceeded to Shree Gokarnanatheshwara Temple at Kudroli, where he was welcomed by senior Congress leader and managing trustee of the temple Janardhan Poojary.
Gandhi was honoured and accepted prasadam.
He was accompanied by CM Siddaramaiah, KPCC president Parameshwara, Mallikarjuna Kharge, MLA Mohiuddin Bava, MLC Ivan D'Souza and others.
Gandhi then left for Ullal where he paid a visit to Syed Madani Dargah. He garlanded the statue of Queen Abbakka at Abbakka Circle in Ullal. He was accompanied by chief minister of Karnataka, Siddaramaiah, and minister, U T Khader, who represents the local constituency.
Expecting Rahul to conduct road show near Kallapu, thousands of party workers had gathered there to welcome Rahul. As the commandos asked Rahul's vehicle not to be stopped at Kallapu, the vehicle directly went to historically famous Sayyid Madani Dargah at Ullal where he offered special prayers and offered the customary 'Chadar' there.
When Rahul was on a visit to Ullal, a minor accident happened between a Duster car and a truck near Kallapu. Khader got down from the vehicle to see that the vehicles are moved aside and free movement of vehicles and people was allowed on highway. As the vehicle carrying Rahul Gandhi did not stop at Kallapu, Khader ran behind it for some time and then reached Ullal by a motor bike.
