Bharat Bandh: Violent protests in Agra, train services halted in Punjab, Bihar, Odisha

New Delhi, Apr 2 (Zee News): Protestors demanding that the roll back of modification to the SC/ST Act suggested by the Supreme Court, clashed with security personnel in Agra on Monday morning. Several shops were vandalised as several protestors began screaming slogans.

Several Dalit groups have called for a nation-wide Bharat Bandh against the proposed modification to the SC/ST Act. In Agra, the protest turned violent when local cops reportedly tried to contain a large group. Unruly scenes of vandalism and sloganeering followed. Massive protests have also been reported from several other parts of the country, including Punjab's Ludhiana and Zirakpur.

Train services at several places across the country were affected as well after protesters blocked railway lines and stopped trains on Monday morning in the ongoing Bharat Bandh. Daily activities were also disrupted in few states after marketplaces and shops remained shut.

The first reports of protestors stopping train came from Odisha Sambalpur.

In Bihar's Arrah, different groups including Communist Party of India (Marxist–Leninist) Liberation or CPI(ML) activists also stopped a train.

Later they blocked the train at Forbesganj Junction.

IANS reported that protestors belonging to Bhim Army in Bihar carried posters, flags and banners and blocked national and state highways - apart from long-distance trains. "In several localities in Patna, supporters of the Bhim Army forced shops to close and blocked roads by burning tyres," a district police official said.

In Punjab too, trains were stopped at few places.

The Bharat Bandh strike was called against the Supreme Court's order to dilute the stringent provisions mandating immediate arrest under the SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities (POA) Act. The bandh is reportedly being supported by several groups such as the Peasants and Workers Party, the Prakash Ambedkar-led Bharip Bahujan Mahasangh, the Centre of Indian Trade Unions, the Jati Aant Sangharsh Samiti, the Rashtriya Seva Dal, and National Dalit Movement for Justice, among others.

Statistics shows the atrocities against dalits, such as murder, rape, burning alive, burning of homes and property, lynching, not allowing to ride horse, not allowing wearing shoes and wrist watches, not allowing keeping moustaches and insulting them from birth to death for being lower caste, is on the increase. Still, SC wants to dilute the law made for their protection. What can we say ? God, save our country from these double standards. A nation, how so forward be in all aspects, but, does not have equality among citizens is very backward in morality.

This law is not for reservation but is for the protection of SCs/STs from persecution from others which BJP have not contested strongly in SC against the petition which resulted in SC diluting the law and which is why now SC/ST are protesting against the SC ruling. Centre has now put in a review petition to SC but it appears to be only as an eyewash to show Dalits that they are on their side which the Dalits do not believe.

"12 Jan 2018 - Political parties reacted cautiously to the concerns raised by four SC judges over judicial interference and 'selective assignments'. ."

Either you pretend to be blind or pretend to be ignorant like the many bhakts.

There is concern within the Supreme Court that there is interference by the Modi Government in the judiciary. So yes the SC suggested modification may not necessarily be a SC suggested one.

    Mr Antony/Mr Declan/Rock
Don't be ignorant of law,it has no excuse ,If Modi wanted to interfere in judiciary he would have recommended for impeachment of some of judges with whom may be having difference.
As communist leaders tried to impeach our chief justice of SC,but later they understood their jumla with support from gutbandhan is not having sufficient mandate for this purpose hence they step back, it called interference, just open your eye and give suggestion.

We do not require BJPians to give us lessons in law especially with a Law minister busy doing press briefings blaming Congress party for Cambridge Analytica data leaks and then being a part of the BJP blunder team releasing a so called chargesheet against the Karnataka Congress party but referring to a report on Mandoor garbage disposal which was published in the year 2012 when their own BJP government with Jagadish Shettar as chief minister was in power. Ha, ha, ha !

Centre put a weak defence. SC is not God. SC dispense justice based on evidence and arguments presented. If evidence and argument is weak SC cannot be blamed, Centre has to be blamed. Even this review petition by Centre is an eyewash to appease the SC/ST people as Centre expected a backlash from them. Please guys we understand BJP's dirty politics who give perception of doing one thing but actually doing something else. It is the perception that BJP depends on for Common citizens to get fooled. However, in time citizens eventually they understand BJP's games.
How come PM Modi came out clean on 2002 matter ? We have followed all those cases in great detail that is why for us there is a huge cloud of doubt hanging there.
We know what we are commenting yaar. We are not blind or deaf.

.. the Supreme Court's ordered to dilute the stringent provisions mandating immediate arrest under the SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities (POA) Act..what harm in it!!...very recently SC Expressed concern over disgruntled wives misusing the anti-dowry law against their husbands and in-laws, and directed that no arrest or coercive action should be taken on such complaints without ascertaining the veracity of allegations..

..this is result of over appeasement by political parties..no party ready to tell them or oppose these protest..what SC ordered..it says dont arrest just on the basis of FIR..it was happening in anti Dowry cases also, many time innocent family members (even aged) arrested.. in 2017 SC removed this clause..as political parties focus too much on communities, caste then these demands, pressure, blackmails bound to happen..
