Margao, Sep 3: A daylight robbery which took place on the morning of Tuesday September 2, at Margao, has caused concern amongst those locals planning to go to their respective villages for Ganesh Chaturthi.
Most Madgaonkars celebrate Chaturthi at their ancestral homes and as a result shops, hotels, and business houses, remain closed during this time. But owing to the recent spate of robberies, people are forced to think twice about leaving the city.
The robbery on Tuesday which took place on Abade Faria Road, in the heart of the city, occurred at the house of Maria Noronha. Robbers decamped with gold ornaments worth Rs 1.80 lac and four thousand in cash. According to police, robbers entered the house through the grilled window in the bathroom and then broke open the lock of a cupboard and stole the ornaments.
The incident has happened despite beefed up police security in the city. Sniffer dogs were pressed into service, but could find nothing. At the time of the robbery, the owner was out shopping. When Noronha returned after an hour, she found clothes and household articles scattered everywhere and called the police.
When contacted, Shekar Prabudesai, superintendent of police, south Goa, informed that the investigation is on and checkposts have been set up all over Margao. He appealed to people leaving on vacation to provide their residential address to the local police station so that patrolling in the area can be increased a watch be maintained to prevent robberies.
