Bharat Dalmia Group adopts Red Fort, Congress objects

New Delhi, Apr 28 (TOI): The Congress today accused the government of "privatising" India's heritage after a corporate group, Dalmia Bharat, signed a contract with the Ministry of Tourism to adopt the iconic Mughal-era monument, Red Fort, for next five years at a cost of Rs 25 crore.

"After handing over the Red Fort to the Dalmia group, which is the next distinguished location that the BJP government will lease out to a private entity?" The Congress party said in a tweet.

Earlier this week, the Dalima Bharat Limited signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Ministry of Tourism for adoption of Red Fort monument under the 'Adopt a Heritage' project. By signing the contract, the Dalmia Bharat Limited became a part of 'Monument Mitras', a group of various private sector companies assigned to look after the operations and the maintenance of this heritage site for the next five years.

The MoU was signed in the presence of KJ Alphons, Hon'ble Minister of State for Tourism (Independent Charge) and other senior officials of Ministry of Tourism, Ministry of Culture and Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

Talking about the signing of MoU, Mr. Puneet Dalmia, Managing Director, Dalmia Bharat Group said, "We are very honoured to have adopted one of the India's top heritage sites. At Dalmia Bharat, we take pride in Indian culture and practise it at the workplace. For us, it is an extension of what we believe in. Adopting a Heritage Project is a unique endeavour by Ministry of Tourism which envisions in developing monuments, heritage and tourist sites across India to enhance their tourism potential and cultural importance. We look forward to adding value to India's heritage sites in every possible manner."

The 'Adopt A Heritage' scheme (Apni Dharohar Apni Pehchan Project) was launched by President of India on World Tourism Day (27th September 2017). Under it, private, public sector companies and corporate individuals are invited to adopt heritage sites and to take up responsibility for making them and promote sustainable tourism through conservation and development under their Corporate Social Responsibility activities.

Red port is not Modi property or Government property to lease. It is belong to decedents of Muslim rulers. Should be returned back to the rightful owners like Rajput palaces of Rajasthan

It is not belong to Indian Government . It was built by Muslim emperor as his residency (house) & should be returned to the decedents of Muslim Mogul Emperor or the Government should purchase it from the decedents of Saha Jahan with fair market price for the people of India (Just like Amba palace, Lalit Palace and Royal palaces of Rajasthan) Indian Government should not have two standards one for the decedents of former Hindu rulers and other one to the decedents of former Muslim rulers.

Sad state of affairs if heritage site maintenance is privatized. Never mind the reason for objecting given by Congress. Heritage sites are national pride, not like "adopt a road.or part of a road.....". which can be so done.

    Stop Privatising India’s Heritage.
The agreement (MOU) arrived at between the Ministry of Tourism, Ministry of Culture and the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and Dalmia Bharat Limited which virtually hands over the iconic Red Fort in Delhi to the Dalmia group for a period of five years in exchange for a payment of 25 crores should be opposed.

The Dalmia group in its own press release has said that they will ‘have to own it for five years initially’ and the contract gives them the freedom to make the Dalmia brand prominently visible. It has the right to use its brand name on all kinds of publicity material to be displayed during events organized at the site and also on all signage. In fact, it will be allowed to proclaim in a prominently displayed sign that the Red Fort has been ‘adopted by Dalmia Bharat Limited’.

It must be remembered that the Red Fort is not just one of many heritage sites in our country. It is the place where the National Flag was hoisted in commemoration of the place that the Fort occupies in the history of our freedom struggle. The first Proclamation of Indian Independence from British rule was read out from its ramparts by Bahadur Shah Zafar in l857. Subsequently his trial was held in the Fort. Some decades later, the historic INA trial which played such a significant role in the battle for Indian freedom was held in the Red Fort. It is this fact that the Red Fort is a symbol of Independent India that has ensured that on Independence Day, 15th August, the Prime Minister addresses the nation with the Fort as his backdrop. Handing over this iconic monument to a corporate entity is nothing short of blasphemous.

It is pertinent to remind the Government that the Parliamentary Committee that went into the issue of handing over heritage sites to private corporate had decided against this unanimously. Let’s urge upon the Government to rescind its decision.
