Mangalore, Sep 12: It is a poignant tale of surviving the odds. A 13-year-old girl was successfully operated upon at the Unity Health complex in the city and a tumour that had been in her abdomen for more than 12 years, was removed.
When she was about a year old, the girl was operated upon as she had a tumour in her abdomen. However, the tumour could not be removed and the girl's parents were sent home with the news that the child might not live beyond a few months. They sought a second opinion and were again told that even if she was treated successfully, the girl may not live long.
Despite such odds, the girl fought pain for 12 years with the tumour growing inside her all along. A seven-hour operation by a team of doctors headed by cancer specialist Dr Jalaluddin Akbar K C, senior surgeon Dr Rakesh Rai, anaesthetist Dr Suresh Bhat, and physician Dr Mohhamed Ismail, finally brought the girl out of her misery.
