New Delhi, May 27: While Prime Minister Narendra Modi was praising the efforts of his own government in Odisha on completion of 4 years in office, social activist Anna Hazare slammed the ruling of the NDA government and reminded Modi of his several ‘unfulfilled’ promises which he made to the nation in 2014.
In a letter, addressed to Modi, Anna Hazare stated that the Government had promised him a high-level expert committee specially designated to look into the problems faced by the farmers of the country. Hazare said that after his week-long hunger strike at Ramlila Maidan in New Delhi in March this year, the government had assured of a special committee to solve farmers’ problems including granting autonomy to Commission for Agriculture Costs & Prices (CACP).
In the letter, Hazare wrote that it has been nearly over two months since his protest and no committee has been set up by the government including the minimum support price to the farmers.
The other problems which were highlighted in the letter were a fixation of a 50 % higher remuneration price, insurance cover for farmers above the age of 60 and many more.
“During your election campaigns, you had made various assurances, including setting up a committee on the recommendations of MS Swaminathan Commission and also given it to me in writing, but it has not been implemented yet. There is no information whether the committee has been formed or not,” the letter reads in part.
He also reminded in the letter that the promises Modi made have to be fulfilled before Gandhi’s 105th birth anniversary.
Hazare added that the government had said that it would waive the GST on agricultural tools within a time period of four months. He further demanded a status of work on those grounds.
“You have given big full-page ads in the newspapers on your government’s achievements in four years. But it is a matter of regret that in past four years, the government has failed to appoint Lokpal and Lokayukta, which you had categorically assured in your election campaigns. It seems your government is not keen on a ‘corruption-free’ India.” the letter says.
