Mangaluru/Udupi, May 29: Heavy rain with thunder and lightning caused severe destruction in the coastal districts beginning from the night of Sunday to late Monday, May 28.
Praveen D'Souza, a resident of Sarolikere Padubettu of Nelyadi village of Puttur was electrocuted when lightning struck him.
Due to lightning, the house of Srinivas, a resident of Nettaru in Bellare village of Sullia has been completely destroyed on the night of Sunday. The estimated loss is around Rs 5 lac.
Two houses were damaged slightly near Padil, Bajal in Mangaluru due to the lightning. Traffic was disrupted as the road near Hosmat Bridge near Kadaba collapsed due to rain. The movement of vehicles resumed in the after some time.
A house in Hosangadi in Beltangady taluk also got damaged due to rain. Two cattle died due to lightning at Kadirudyavara village. The houses of Sundar, Sundar M and Kusuma, residents of Golipadavu near Bettampady in Puttur got damaged as per the report given by the office of the deputy commissioner.
Electric poles uprooted
Hundreds of electricity poles have fallen to the ground in the district of Udupi and the power supply got disrupted. 35 houses in Karkal and 37 houses in Udupi have got damaged as per the reports received.
A tree fell on the car of Vanita, a resident of Moodanidambur in Udupi. The cost of the damage is Rs 3 lac. Trees fell on the houses of Girija Poojarthi of Kodavoor and Baby Shetty of Doddanagudde. The cost of the damage is estimated at Rs 1.5 lac and Rs 1.2 lac respectively. Incidents of water flowing inside the house are also reported from some places.
Monsoon entered Kerala?
The monsoon winds have entered Kerala on Monday, May 28 as per the reports given by Skymet, the private weather forecast organization. However, as per the forecast given by Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday, May 28, Monsoon will enter Kerala in the next 24 hours.
Jatin Singh, CEO of Skymet, who gave information on this matter, said that the monsoon atmosphere has been created in Kerala and the southwest winds have entered on Monday. However, the meteorological department has clarified that if it rains 2.5 mm or more in 14 places including Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and Mangaluru for two consecutive days after May 10, then it is possible to announce that monsoon has entered the state of Kerala.
Since four or six days several parts of India including coastal Karnataka have received a good amount of rain. A warning has been given to the fishermen and residents of the coast to be alert as the monsoon is about to enter the state.
