Historic moment for Saudi as women begin driving after ban officially ends

Riyadh, Jun 24 (AP): Saudi women are in the driver's seat for the first time in their country and steering their way through busy city streets just minutes after the world's last remaining ban on women driving was lifted on Sunday.

It's a euphoric and historic moment for women who have had to rely on their husbands, fathers, brothers and drivers to run basic errands, get to work, visit friends or even drop kids off at school. The ban had relegated women to the backseat, restricting when and how they move around. But after midnight on Sunday, Saudi women finally joined women around the world in being able to get behind the wheel of a car and simply drive.

"I'm speechless. I'm so excited it's actually happening," said Hessah al-Ajaji, who drove her family's Lexus down the capital's busy Tahlia Street after midnight. Al-Ajaji had a United States driver's license before obtaining a Saudi one and appeared comfortable at the wheel as she pulled up and parked.

As for the male drivers on the road, "they were really supportive and cheering and smiling," she said.

In a few hours, she says she'll drive herself to work for the first time in Saudi Arabia.

For nearly three decades, outspoken Saudi women and the men who supported them had called for women to have the right to drive. They faced arrest for defying the ban as women in other Muslim countries drove freely.

In 1990, during the first driving campaign by activists, women who got behind the wheels of their cars in the capital, Riyadh, lost their jobs, faced severe stigmatization and were barred from travel abroad for a year.

Ultraconservatives in Saudi Arabia had long warned that allowing women to drive would lead to sin and expose women to harassment. Ahead of allowing women to drive, the kingdom passed a law against sexual harassment with up to five years prison for the most severe cases.

Criticism against women driving has largely been muted since King Salman announced last year that they would be allowed to drive. Simultaneously, however, at least 10 of the most outspoken supporters of women's rights were arrested just weeks before the ban was lifted, signalling that only the king and his powerful son, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, will decide the pace of change.

With state-backed support for the move, many Saudis now say they support the decision allowing women to drive and see it as long overdue.

Not all women are driving at once, though.

The overwhelming majority of women in Saudi Arabia still don't have licenses. Many haven't had a chance to take the gender-segregated driving courses that were first offered to women only three months ago. There's also a waiting list of several months for the classes on offer in major cities. And the classes can be costly, running several hundred dollars. Other women already own cars driven by chauffeurs and are in no rush to drive themselves.

In many cases, women say they'll wait before rushing to drive to see how the situation on the streets pans out and how male drivers react.

"I will get my driver's license, but I won't drive because I have a driver. I am going to leave it for an emergency. It is one of my rights and I will keep it in my purse," said 60-year-old Lulwa al-Fireiji.

While some still quietly oppose the change, there are men openly embracing it.

"I see that this decision will make women equal to men and this will show us that women are capable of doing anything a man can do," said Fawaz al-Harbi.

"I am very supportive and in fact, I have been waiting for this decision so that my mother, my sisters will drive."

Definitely historic considering the conservative Wahabi type of Islam practiced in Saudi Arabia.
However, also note this development based on following facts to understand the backwardness religion can actively drive in society.
    1. Women drive car in 2018, while the first single engine car was invented in 1879.
    2. Saudi Arabia imports its cars and makes none - Has the purchasing power but forbade Women driving.
    3. Saudi Arabia until recently sold fuel at very cheap price - High fuel costs also cannot be an option
    4. Annual growth rate of Car sales is 10% in recent years, a significant number for a saturated market.
    5. Saudi Arabia has had very good infrastructure for car based economy - still 40% of population were kept out of it.
I don't know the religious reasons for not allowing and hence cannot comment.
Nevertheless, I always believed that when Saudi Arabia brings change it has significant bearing on entire Ummah. I really hope that MBS will stop looking at Iran and Yemen and look inwards to dedicate precious resources of the country to put Saudi Arabia on top gear in its competition with the Shias.

Chris, what culture you are talking about? Confining women inside four walls, forcing women to go against their wish? It's manmade "culture" which is imposed on women by force. Most of the cultures they had were unIslamic. Saudi women had no voice though their men and media were telling from top of their voice that their women had full freedom. And the culture you are talking about is only for poor and middle-class people, not for the super rich and royal family members. I have witnessed a Saudi women driving car nearly 20 years ago. When she was overspeeding, a police followed her and finally was able to stop her. Since her car had black windshield, from outside one could not see who was driving. When the cop came to know that the woman driver was belonging to a royal family, he quietly allowed her to go. I have lived in Saudi Arabia for long enough to know their culture. Instead of appreciating for the liberal policies their new king is implementing, you are supporting their age-old policies which have no values and respect in the 21st century.

Dear Chris, and all those who are happy that Saudi Arabia is deviating from its religious inclinations, note that per se driving of women is not banned in Islam.

Further, Saudi Arabia is not the representative of the religion of Islam. It doesn't become religion when Saudi Arabia approves of it or bans it. There are firm believers of Islam in all parts of the world including Saudi Arabia itself.

    Dear Nawaz,
Totally agree with your point at the outset.
However, when hitherto conservative societies like Saudi Arabia liberalizes, it certainly sets a precedent. Arguments such as against religion, or un-Islamic, or culture goes out for a toss when a precedent is set by countries such as Saudi Arabia.
    1. Triple Talaq is banned in many countries where Islam is State religion including Pakistan & Saudi Arabia. That sets a precedent. Thanks to our secular fabric, we are yet to draw consensus on it.
    2. Liberalizing women and empowering them has significant advantages. I would not call, Indian women liberalized and for that matter world over either (Examples: 1. Never ending gender based wage disparity. 2. Lack of Board Room seats for Women. 3. Women feeling less secure after dusk when unaccompanied by men in significant part of liberal world. etc.) But to a great extent this will make an impact to society and cultures therein.
    3. No, it does not become religion with Saudi's lifting ban. But this thought stems from the belief that Saudi royal family spends most on mosques and religious education world over. Saudi Arabia even offered to build Europe's largest mosque for the benefit of refugees when Europe asked help for coping with refugee exodus on its border. So yes, changes in Saudi can have far reaching implications.

    Dear Rita/Germany:
Do not want to sound chauvinist but yes, women behind wheels on the roads are less predictive. Following are based on my observations:
    1. They defy logic with every move of theirs on the road and cause frustration to fellow male drivers. It is a fact and there is no denying that. This observation is without borders and not confined to any country.
    2. There are only 2 types of women drivers. First is the novice lot, who despite many years of experience have full potential to cause confusion on a busy road and their approach on the first day, first year, first decade is the same. Second is expert drivers, who are risky and rash. Population of second is on the lower side.
    3. Based on the driving pattern, it is not hard to make out that a lady is behind the wheel, without even having to check for it. No, driving slow is not safe driving.
So, safe driver alone is not a good metric, but a driver full of confidence to follow the driving etiquette that believes in consideration for fellow drivers on the road is also important.
