Mangaluru, Jun 25: District in-charge minister U T Khader held a meeting with smart city board directors, members, officials and local representatives at KUDIFC office on Monday, June 25.

Briefing the media on the decisions taken in the meeting, he said, “Collectively, we the local representatives and the district administration have decided to work towards making Mangaluru, a model city which can be followed by other cities in the Smart City project. The progress of work will be keenly looked into. The managing director will be accountable for the whole project and he will have all powers which include choosing of constituencies. It will be his responsibility to get work done by other officials and contractors. If they fail to do their duty, he will have the right to take action against them. He will arrange a review meeting in every 15 days. Meanwhile, I will summon a meeting with local MLAs and representatives once in a month to evaluate the progress of the project. Smart City is a project which will benefit all citizens. Without any political motive, all representatives should involve in it actively. With unity, we can complete this project in a record breaking time.

“Without people’s support, we cannot move forward with this project. Road widening, construction of drainages, footpaths, and bridges all are included in the Smart City project. So there are possibilities of land acquisition. Hence, people should cooperate with officials and support them,” he said.

About the delay in land conversion process in the limits of Mangaluru City Corporation he said, “It has come to my notice that there is a delay in the land conversion process in city limits. There are technical reasons due to which there is delay during the time of application and further process. I have directed the officials to submit a detailed report on this within June 26. I will consider this matter seriously and discuss it with officials in Bengaluru.”

MLC Ivan D’Souza, MLAs Vedavyas Kamath and Y Bharath Shetty, and mayor Bhaskar Moily were present.

Kader Bhai, with people's co-operation you have been chosen as the minister in the last GE. Now it's time for you to show corrupt free development & Governance in DK. People has faith on you. So don't betray them. Don't be another minister like your other counterparts of your party.

"Smart City" concept in Mangalore should be viewed in the context of a "big picture" for a City such as Mangalore where the City has already advanced well with the Educational, Cultural, Social and Economical involvements. People of Mangalore are well familiar with all the new responsibilities ahead of them in order to make Mangalore into a "greater City" than ever before.

Mangalore has all the framework of a "Smart City" where the new and modern technologies have to emerge slowly but steadily in line with the economic trend where politics also continue to play an important role.

"Smart City" concept is a new challenge for all the leaders that are already at the helm of making good decisions. So long as we have the good intentions in our heart to improve our city that will not only bring new jobs and new outlooks, but also bring new ideas that can be matched with some of the other model cities that have blossomed in many parts of the world.

We wish best of success in all that the City of Mangalore is planning for the betterment of the people. Every new step with new ideas will help Mangalore to grow and prosper. In the process of all that is being planned let there be a strong bed of unity and diversity amongst the people so that justice will prevail in all our future undertakings, and also the unity will continue to shine amongst people of all parties, cultures and backgrounds. God bless.

Why do they need to widen roads to make a city smart? All these projects are a ploy for the builders, politicians, contractors, officials to make more money.
I won't give an inch of land if it comes to me.

PK, I don't think your demand can be granted. Because, land ownership in India is not a Fundamental right, its amended to be constitutional right. As such, if the government asks for a part of your land for building road, dam, airport or any such facility for the public use, citizens are obliged to abide by it. Of-course, for a compensation.

The government has authority to demolish even a monument of prayer (Temple/Church/Mosque/Gurudwara) that hinders developmental projects.

We won't be sitting there allowing them to take our land. Forget 70%, even 10% of my neighbours will not give consent to sell their land. We have seen the havoc these people have caused through their ill-thought plans, illogical development and plain greed.

Development means human development, not development of roads alone. Clean drinking water should also be available, which should be the first priority, here during monsoon we get dirty brown water to drink. I stayed at Ahmedabad earlier for 50 years and there were power outages for maintenance for only 5 times in 50 years, 4 hours duration each and we were informed well in advance about the power outage. For a smart city a good quality electricity without voltage fluctuation and power outages is a must. These are the 2 basic essentials of human development.
Wide roads do not solve traffic congestion and it has been proved all over the world. On a 50 lane road in China, there was a traffic jam for many hours. Also on another wide road, again in China, the road was jammed for 10 days! The answer to traffic problems is a Mass Rapid Transport System in the form of Metro or Monorail. People can travel fast, in comfort and at a low cost. Funds for smart city should be utilized for a MRTS in Mangalore and not for roads.
I would agree with P.K. that we should not surrender our land for road widening, if at all they want our land, they should follow the Land Acquisition Act, 2013 in letter and spirit. If people join together, the authorities can acquire you land. As for example, in case of red building lane, Valentia ward and Durgamahal to Bokapatna Church in Kudroli ward, people refused to give land under TDR and insisted that land be acquired according to the Land Acquisition Act 2013, which is an Act of Parliament and has supremacy and primacy over all other Acts. In both the cases, authorities could not acquire land for road widening.

    Monty,

The road that leads to your home, is because somebody else in that area let that land. If all had blocked and protested, you may had to walk to your courtyard. Similarly, the roads in the city were never there, they were built to the present length and breadth by acquiring.

You might protest and stay upright now but when you are no more, your children will say we want a broader road to bring our bigger modern vehicle. Its just one generation of adamance. Once you are gone, nobody will contain that sentiments for the land your ancestors bestowed on you.

Road widening and repairing roads or making new concrete roads, construction of drainage, footpaths are the main thing for smart city.

Specially in the city these days lot of traffic jams. There should be 2 way roads with signal. If there is no co-operation from public then need to take strict action on them. But be specific what kind of cooperation you need from the public? You have the money and the power so what else stops you.
