Belagavi: Haj Bhavan renaming row - BJP MP accuses Congress of dividing Hindus and Muslims

Daijiworld Media Network – Belagavi (DC)

Belagavi, Jun 26: BJP MP Suresh Angadi on Tuesday blamed the Congress for dividing Hindus and Muslims by renaming the Haj Bhavan after Tipu Sultan.

His comments have come in the wake of ongoing controversy involving Minority and Wakf Minister Zameer Ahmed Khan after he made a statement that there was a proposal to name the Haj Bhavan after Tipu Sultan.

Zameer’s statement however did not go down well with the BJP leaders who openly blamed him of supporting a traitor and anti-national like Tipu Sultan.

Suresh Angadi while speaking to media persons on June 26 in Belagavi said that Congress was conspiring to divide Hindus and Muslims by naming the Haj Bhavan in Bengaluru after Tipu Sultan.

Suresh Angadi

"The Haj Bhavan was sanctioned during B S Yeddyurappa's government. The Congress could instead, have chosen to name it after former president Dr A P J Abdul Kalam, a patriot and scientist. Congress wants to gain political mileage out of it. Congress's culture is to divide and rule. In Kashmir, its leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad and Saifuddin Soz have been making anti-India statements and encouraging stone pelting," he alleged.

Earlier BJP senior leader and former CM B S Yeddyurappa too suggested the state government to rename the Haj Bhavan after former president APJ Abdul Kalam.

However, Zameer said that there was a demand by religious leaders and others to name Haj house as ‘Hazrat Tipu Sultan Haj Ghar’ and he would discuss about renaming the Haj Bhavan with the chief minister and deputy chief minister before taking a final decision.

Tipu, ruling from 1782 to 1799, might very well have been all of the above. But in 2017, both his supporters and detractors are twisting history, by applying to his regime concepts that did not exist during Tipu's time.
He was a great administrator, credited, among other things, with coming up with a land revenue system, promoting sericulture - which continues to be a major industry in modern-day Karnataka - and being the first to plan what later became the Krishna Raja Sagara dam on the Cauvery.
Tipu is, perhaps, best remembered for being among the earliest known rulers to deploy a rocket in warfare, much to the shock and confusion of the British. According to a lecture in the archives of the National Aerospace Laboratories by aerospace scientist Professor Roddam Narasimha: "The Mysore rockets of this period were much more advanced than what the British had seen or known, chiefly because of the use of iron tubes for holding the propellant; this enabled higher bursting pressures in the combustion chamber and hence higher thrust and longer range for the missile."

These rockets later became the prototype for the Congreve rocket.

In 2015, Karnataka government began celebrating Tipu Sultan’s birthday. This year, it triggered a controversy when BJP’s Union minister Ananth Kumar Hegde, asked to be left out of the function.
The BJP, too, has celebrated Tipu Sultan before 2015, although to make Tipu Jayanti a state sponsored event was the doing of the Congress.
In fact, back in 2012, the Department of Kannada and Culture had published a book titled Tipu Sultan. A Crusader for Change. Authored by Dr Sheikh Ali, the 338-page monograph speaks of Tipu’s achievements, acquisitions, and his fight against the British Empire. In the book, there is a message from the then CM Jagadish Shettar.
Tipu Jayanti existed even before 2015. It was just not a state-sponsored celebration then.
This is an attempt to divide the vote bank along communal lines.

Today’s Congress is worse than third class BJP. Gone are the days of Indira & Rajiv Gandhi when the party was truly secular. Now it has turned from secular to sickular.

Whole world knows that communal problems were created by BJP and also has been mentioned in UN. Starting from Rathayatra by Advani, Cow issues, love jhihad, Ram Mandir building which was promissed to built with in six months of coming to power by BJP. Still it is one of the slogans for next election. VHP collected money for Ram Mandir bricks and used it for their organisation. Majority of these old guys like Advani are Pak returned after Independence and are creating problems for us Indians.

Why to change names?? What good it will bring to people?? Please dont waste time on changing names or renaming structures, which is an unproductive and time waste exercise. Let the original name remain unchanged. Use the time to discuss welfare please.

You are right, government should pay attention to development work not renaming of public places.
Mogal Saray station has been renamed recently, Aurangazeb road, Akber Road, and many more names will be changed in near future.
A rule must be passed NOT TO RENAME any existing names, if at all govenment want to remember any public figure, they need to name new roads, buildings, etc after them.
