Bengaluru, Jun 28: A report by Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre, Bengaluru, has said that rainfall this time has been the highest during the last one decade in coastal and Malnad regions of Karnataka. It added that in some of the taluks in Malnad, rainfall this time has been the highest in the previous 13 years.
The report is based on the quantum of rainfall received in these regions between June 1 and 24. As against the average of 596 mm rainfall normally experienced by these areas during this period, these areas got average rainfall of 695 mm. The rainfall this time has been 17 percent more than the average. During the above period, Malnad region got 424 mm rainfall as opposed to the normal rainfall of 253 mm. Because of the force of the monsoon this time, rainfall in Malnad is 68 percent more, which is highest during the last 13 years.
Even Bengaluru, Kodagu, Mysuru and southern inland have received better rainfall as compared to last year, although the rainfall here is less when compared to the years 2014 and 2015. As opposed to this, rainfall has not been to the expected extent in northern inland areas like Bidar, Sindagi, Bailahongala, Ramadurga, Kalaburagi, Koppal etc. Mandya and Anekal are among the taluks which have registered less rain this time.
As Konkan region in Maharashtra is receiving heavy rainfall, River Krishna is experiencing heavy inflow. The barrage built across the river at Ugara in Belagavi district was inundated on Wednesday.
The centre has predicted heavy rainfall in all areas of coastal Karnataka and a few districts in southern inland till July 2. It said that as per indications, Hassan, Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru, and Shivamogga districts too will experience heavy rainfall between June 28 and July 2.
