Udupi, Jul 1: The general session of zilla panchayat (ZP) which met on Saturday June 30, decided to suspend collection of toll charges on national highway (NH) 66 as the road has not been maintained properly and it is dotted with damaged patches and potholes.
ZP member, Janardhana Thonse, who raised the topic, pointed out about a number of accidents happening at Santhekatte here and wanted to know the current status of the proposal to build pedestrian over-bridge and bus stand there. Geethanjali Suvarna, supporting him said that road is not being repaired, and accidents are occurring because of potholes on the highway. She blamed the authorities for being unable to repair even the potholes. Several ZP members expressed anger at the fact that the work is not being attended although this issue has been repeatedly raised.
Engineer of National Highways Authority of India, Gururaj, said that proposal for pedestrian over-bridge at Santhekatte had been submitted to the centre in November last, but approval for the same has not yet been received. He said that sending of proposals and asking the concerned to repair the highway is within his department's hands but actual repair does not fall within the department's authority.
The members expressed dissatisfaction about this response and Thonse demanded to convene a separate meeting solely for the purpose of discussing highway-related issues. At this juncture, MLA, Raghupati Bhat, suggested that a resolution to close down both the tollgates in the district can be taken till the highway repair work is attended to. He said that at the same time, letters may be addressed to the district deputy commissioner and superintendent of police not to provide security at these gates. After this, a decision to suspend collection of toll charges was taken.
The MLA felt that shortage of doctors in primary health centres, which is affecting patients, can be addressed if these hospitals are given to medical colleges and private hospitals for maintenance. He suggested that the ZP can taken a decision on this issue.
Kundapur MLA, Halady Srinivas Shetty, Kaup MLA, Lalaji R Mendon MLC, Pratapchandra Shetty, ZP vice president, Sheela K Shetty, chairman of social justice standing committee, Shashikanth Padubidri, and others were present.
