Nun abuse case: Bishop to be summoned for grilling

Kottayam/Kochi, Jul 3 (TOI): The police team investigating the alleged sexual abuse of a nun by Catholic bishop Franco Mulakkal of Jalandhar diocese will soon summon him to Kerala for interrogation.

The bishop will be served notice after recording the nun’s statement under CrPC Section 164. The decision came after the team confirmed that as per the convent’s visitors’ book, the bishop stayed there on the days, as alleged in the nun’s complaint.

The chief judicial magistrate court in Kottayam considered the police’s application regarding this on Monday and assigned the Changanassery judicial magistrate to record the statement.

The probe team under Vaikom DSP K Subash also recorded the statements of four nuns residing in the convent. The statement of the remaining two will be taken soon. According to Subash, the four nuns came to know about the alleged abuse from the survivor. She had also given the complaint to various church heads, including the cardinal, keeping them informed.

The complaint of the bishop is also being probed together with the nun’s complaint. Based on the bishop’s complaint, police recorded the statement of one person. The Syro-Malabar Church head Cardinal George Alencherry, in an official communiqué on Monday, denied receiving any sexual assault complaint against Mulakkal.

It is possible that the nun is right.

There is much more to the case than what is apparent through the media.

The Syro-Malabar Church (although has a 'union' with Rome) is distinct from the Roman Catholic (Latin) church.
When a Syro-Malabar member wants to become a priest or a nun in the Latin church, they have to officially 'leave' the Syro-Malabar Church and 'join' the Latin church. This is done by seeking a permission from the Syro-Malabar hierarchy.

This nun has done that, and is a nun with the (Latin) Jalandhar diocese. So, Syro-Malabar Church (and its Cardinal Alencherry) have NO MORE official linkage with the (Latin) nun. Plain and simple, she has left the original church.

The (Latin) bishop of Jalandhar ordered a transfer of the nun. She resented the transfer.

She has come up with various accusations. And dragged in the Syro-Malabar Church (and its Cardinal Alencherry) even though they have no jurisdiction over the nun who has left that church years ago.
