Mangaluru: Heavy rains lash coastal districts, likely to continue for next 3 days

Mangaluru, Jul 7: The coastal region, which has been witnessing moderate rains since the last few days, witnessed very heavy rains on Thursday night and Friday.

On Saturday morning too, dark clouds loomed over the city followed by heavy rains.

It is said that rains will continue for next three days.

Low lying areas in the city were waterlogged which lead to traffic disruption in some areas.

Mulki, Madanthyar, Padubidri, Punjalkatte, Venur, Bantwal, Suratkal, Subramanya, Kadaba, Karkala, Puttur, Uppinangadi, Belthangady, Guruvayanakere also received heavy rains.

Heavy rains lashed Udupi district on Friday. Hebri, Bajegoli, Kundapura, Brahmavar, Kaup, Shirva and other parts of the district also witnessed rain.

According to the meteorological department, heavy rains will continue to lash coastal Karnataka for the next three days.

Two people lost lives due to mishaps, caused by rains on Friday, July 6. A wall collapsed at a house in Puttur’s Hebbarabail. Parvathi (65) and her 11-year-old grandson Dhanush lost life in this mishap.

A complaint has been registered in Puttur police station and Assistant Police Commissioner H Krishnamurthy visited the spot.

In Moodbidri, Sullia and Beltangady, holiday has been declared for schools. In Mangaluru some schools declared holiday for students.

Many schools declared holiday in Udupi district also. The Udupi DC has not declared holiday. She clarified that during monsoons, local school authorities will decide on declaring holiday for schools.

District-level decision on holidays is always informed in advance, DC said.
